LCD Soundsystem "American Dream" (2017)

American Dream
release date: Sep. 1, 2017
format: cd
[album rate: 4 / 5] [3,84]
producer: James Murphy
label: DFA / Columbia - nationality: USA

Track highlights: 1. "Oh Baby" (live) - 2. "Other Voices" - 3. "I Used To" - 4. "Change Yr Mind" - 6. "Tonite" - 7. "Call the Police" - 9. "Emotional Haircut"

4th studio album by LCD Soundsystem who had re-united in 2016 is like the third album basically a James Murphy project-album featuring old associates. Looking at the credit list for the album, Murphy plays almost all instruments, though Al Doyle also contribute on several tracks, but official band members Pat Mahoney, Nancy Whang, Tyler Pope, Gavin Rayna Russom, Matt Thornley and Korey Richey nearly only appear on one or two tracks.
Stylistically, LCD Soundsystem still plays on some of the same sources - with some tracks being more electronic, some in the rock genre of alt. dance and dance-punk, and then there are more bold elements of synthpop scattered all over the album, which together with the electronic bits makes it a rather fresh and energetic collection of songs that makes me think of Underworld - only with more power.
In my mind, this is not only the best studio album and a nice surprise by LCD Soundsystem, it's also one of the best albums of 2017.

LCD Soundsystem "London Sessions" (2010) (live)

London Sessions (live)
release date: Nov. 8, 2010
format: cd (2011)
[album rate: 3,5 / 5] [3,64]
producer: James Murphy; DFA
label: DFA Records - nationality: USA

Track highlights: 1. "Us v Them" - 2. "All I Want" - 4. "Get Innocuous!" - 5. "Daft Punk Is Playing at My House" - 6. "All My Friends" - 8. "I Can Change" - 9. "Yr City Is a Sucker"
[ full album ]

Live-in-the-studio album of recordings at The Pool recording studio of Miloco Studios in London, England, Tuesday Jun. 29, 2010. The album was released as a downloadable album only Nov. 8, 2010 and on cd Jan. 24, 2011. On this occasion the band consists of James Murphy on vocals and percussion, Nancy Whang on keyboards and vocals, Pat Mahoney on drums and vocals, Tyler Pope on bass, percussion and vocals, Gavin Russom on synth, keyboards, percussion and vocals, David Scott Stone on guitar, percussion, synth and vocals and with Matt Thornley on guitar, percussion and vocals.
The collection of songs here are taken from all three previous studio albums, which makes it a good compilation as it comes with two tracks from the debut, three from Sound of Silver and four from This Is Happening. I actually find that the tracks (#2, #3, #7 and #8) from the most recent studio album all sound better in this more vibrant and dance-punk production, and on top of that, they also make the compositions from the various albums feel like one whole.
All in all this is truly one of the band's best albums.
Prior to the album release James Murphy had started rumours about the band's near end, and on Feb. 8, 2011, on the band's website, LCD Soundsystem proclaimed that they would play their last concert in April.

LCD Soundsystem "This Is Happening" (2010) (live)

This Is Happening (live)
release date: May 18, 2010
format: cd
[album rate: 3 / 5] [3,24]
producer: The DFA [ aka Tim Goldsworthy & James Murphy]
label: DFA Records - nationality: USA

Track highlights: 1. "Dance Yrself Clean" - 2. "Drunk Girls" - 5. "I Can Change" (live) - 6. "You Wanted a Hit" (live)

3rd studio album by LCD Soundsystem follows a well-known formula with Goldsworthy and Murphy of the band in the producer seat and with Murphy both as the most extensively credited members as well composer of most tracks. According to the credit list the band has been reduced to a quintet, but in essence it's more obvious that it has become a one-man project band as the other four members are reduced to appearances on one track [!]. Pat Mahoney, Nancy Whang and Tyler Pope are credited for drums, vocals and bass on track #7, whereas Philip Mossman simply isn't credited for any contributions. Eric Broucek and Mandy Coon seem out of the [project] band and also co-founding member and co-producer Tim Goldsworthy is only credited for his producer part. So in essence, LCD Soundsystem is James Murphy.
The style is very close to that of the predecessor, and that's both good and bad as all the influences the band play on are so wide-ranged that it's hard to just copy but that's nevertheless what comes out as: a close to a copy of Sound of Silver. The album is a mix of tracks that play on either rock- and dance punk-influences, indietronica and old-school synth pop and what could be labelled new wave.
The album was met by positive reviews and became the band's so far best selling album reaching number #10 in the US (number #1 on the Top Dance / Electronic Albums list), number #7 in the UK and #11 in Australia.
It's really not bad at all, but I don't think that it adds much new to the repertoire, and what seems "worse" is the absence of strong hit-songs. It sounds to me as an attempt to make another album they've already produced. "Dance Yrself Clean" and "I Can Change" are clearly the album's best tracks. "Drunk Girls" is a fine up-tempo track but sounds much like an Undertones replica, "All I Want" sounds too close to an indietronica version of Bowie's " 'Heroes' ", "You Wanted a Hit" starts off like a Sakamoto rip-off (but then luckily winds up on its own), and the remaining tracks sort of vanish in anonymity, imho, which ultimately makes it a bit of a bland experience.
Shortly after the album release James Murphy apparently had announced that it would probably be the last album by LCD Soundsystem, although, he later that year is said to have suggested that the band may continue as a project-band - but without being a big thing.

LCD Soundsystem "Sound of Silver" (2007)

Sound of Silver
release date: Mar. 12, 2007
format: cd
[album rate: 3,5 / 5] [3,62]
producer: The DFA [Tim Goldsworthy & James Murphy]
label: DFA Records Japan - nationality:

Track highlights: 1. "Get Innocuous!" - 2. "Time to Get Away" - 3. "North American Scum" - 4. "Someone Great" (5 / 5) - 6. "Us V Them"

2nd full studio album by LCD Soundsystem in a Japanese edition including 3 bonus tracks.
It's really not that different from the debut album as they still make use of various influences - on the first three tracks one will hear funk and alt. dance / dance-punk pointing to a more standard rock-outing, but with the track "Someone Great" the album takes a turn towards indietronics and synth pop, which is nicely continued on "All My Friends" before returning to a funky rhythmic conglomerate of all their styles blending funk, electro-disco, synth pop and dance-punk in just one song: "Us V Them". The standard album closer "New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down" is another "weird"-styled track building on a singer / songwriter tradition that makes me think of Lou Reed.
The Japanese edition of the album continues with two (much alike) remixes of the album track "North American Scum" and "Hippie Priest Bum-Out" - all of which are danceable tunes without being really memorable.
The huge blend is really not bad at all - it's highly original, though you may need to reserve time to digest this fusion of styles. It strikes me that the band re-use bits and pieces one will find in the late 1970s varying from the disco sound to more new wave- and art pop-oriented artists - from American artists like Donna Summer, Blondie, Talking Heads, Devo and The B-52's to British David Bowie, Altered Images, Human League and Gang Of Four.
Sound of Silver was met by positive reviews and nominated a Grammy Award for Best Electronic / Dance album of the year [handed to We Are the Night by The Chemical Brothers], and it's included in "1001 Album You Must Hear Before You Die".
I really enjoy this album, although, I don't find it all that homogeneous, and "Someone Great" is a marvellous track.

LCD Soundsystem "Introns" (2006)

Introns
release date: Mar. 13, 2006
format: digital (10 x File, MP3)
[album rate: 3,5 / 5] [3,32]
producer: The DFA [Tim Goldsworthy & James Murphy]
label: DFA - nationality: USA

Track highlights: 1. "Yr City's a Sucker" - 2. "Daft Punk Is Playing at My House (Soulwax Shibuya Mix)" - 5. "Slowdive (XFM Session)" - 10. "Too Much Love (Rub 'n' Tug Mix)"

Remix album by LCD Soundsystem released as a digital download album only. The album compiles a number of B-sides and remixes from the band's eponymous debut album and associated singles. Apparently, the front cover shows [band leader] James Murphy's (vinyl) record collection. Three of the tracks are from a session recorded for the London radio station XFM. The session version of "Slowdive", a Siouxsie and the Banshees cover, was originally on the "Disco Infiltrator" single. The album consists of 10 tracks with an extensive playing time above the hour.
It's quite fine collection of dance-oriented tracks, also because some of the remix tracks are quite original - without being truly groundbreaking, but it may be seen as a kind of a positive gesture from this creative band. Both "Disco infiltrator" and "Tribulations" comes in quite different remix versions, and "Slowdive" is a rather original cover that falls completely within this band's sound.

LCD Soundsystem "LCD Soundsystem" (2005)

LCD Soundsystem [debut]
release date: Jan. 24, 2005
format: cd (2 cd)
[album rate: 3,5 / 5] [3,54]
producer: The DFA [Tim Goldsworthy & James Murphy]
label: DFA, Columbia - nationality: USA

Track highlights: Disc 1: 1. "Daft Punk Is Playing at My House" (4 / 5) (live on Letterman) - 2. "Too Much Love" - 3. "Tribulations" - 6. "On Repeat" - 7. "Thrills" - 8. "Disco Infiltrator" - - Disc 2: 1. "Losing My Edge" - 7. "Yr City's a Sucker (Full Version)"

Full-length studio album debut by LCD Soundsystem after having released a number of singles and the self-titled ep LCD Soundsystem in 2004 where one will find all 4 tracks on this album (tracks #1, #3, #6 & #8). The album was released both as a 2-disc album as well as an ordinary 1-disc album with the tracks #1-9 on DFA Records - founded by British musician and producer Tim Goldsworthy with American dj and musician James Murphy together with manager Jonathan Galkin. Together the two are producer-unit The DFA ('Death From Above').
LCD Soundsystem is a mere musical collective consisting of 7 individuals with songwriter James Murphy at its centre. As it simply states on the back cover info of the album: "most sounds": James Murphy [and] "other sounds": Tim Goldsworthy, Eric Broucek, Tyler Pope, Nancy Whang, Patrick Mahoney, Mandy Coon [the remainders].
Musically, it's clearly built on electronic but there's bold use of classic rock instruments like ordinary electric guitar, bass, keyboard and drums, or: it really depends on the individual tracks. "Movement" and "Never as Tired as When I'm Waking Up" are indie rock, alt. rock tracks, but the majority of the tracks are more indietronica-founded with various elements from synthpop and alt. dance, and there are clear funk-elements on most tracks. At times I find that the music by LCD Soundsystem sounds much like a combo of Talking Heads and B-52's in updated versions, at other times more like Devo, Depeche Mode or Gang of Four with the addition of funky and / or electronic bits, and then it also strikes me to build on (primarily) British electronic music exemplified by The Chemical Brothers and Underworld, but nevertheless, in an original blend.
It's a quite dance-oriented album and it harvested broad critical acclaim as well as a number of nominations including the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Electronic / Dance Album.

Gossip "Music for Men" (2009)

Music for Men
release date: Jun. 22, 2009
format: cd (2010 reissue)
[album rate 4 / 5] [4,08]
producer: Rick Rubin
label: Sony Records Japan - nationality: USA

Track highlights: 1. "Dimestore Diamond" - 2. "Heavy Cross" (4 / 5) (Live at Jonathan Ross) - 3. "8th Wonder" (5 / 5) (Live in Germany) - 4. "Love Long Distance" (Live at Reading Festival) - 5. "Pop Goes the World" - 6. "Vertical Rhythm" - 7. "Men in Love" (4 / 5) - 9. "2012" - 12. "Spare Me From the Mold"

4th studio album release by this fine American trio, Gossip, released almost 3½ years after Standing in the Way of Control (Jan. 2006). The line-up remains intact with Beth Ditto on vocals, Brace Paine [aka Nathan Howdeshell] on guitar, bass & keyboards, and with Hannah Blilie on drums & percussion. The album was originally released by Columbia as a 12-track standard album - the 2010 Japan issue contains three bonus tracks of which two are remixes of tracks #2 and #4.
Musically they continue their energetic indie rock-approach by embracing dance-punk and now also disco-elements, and at the same time they have now left behind a shallower garage rock-sound, which mostly characterised their first two albums. Rick Rubin is here key-producer in guaranteeing a solid rock sound with strong dance appeal. He's been a bit all over the place in terms of genres and styles since starting out mostly as rap and hip hop-producer in the late 80s but after crossing to the alt. rock scene, he has been near synonymous with flawless productions - he also produced the band's live-album Live in Liverpool (Dec. 2007).
With Gossip you may say it's business as usual in the way that it's energetic and tight alt. rock. The dance-punk element from the 2006 album is further underlined in a more dynamic production and the album simply comes out with a stronger sound than its predecessor. This is just great music for driving or cleaning the house but it needs volume. Beth is one hell of a singer and the music is really addictive. Music for Men is undoubtedly the band's best album, but it's more difficult to point out their second-best album but I can only recommend Standing in the Way of Control (2006) and A Joyful Noise (2012).
The front cover for this album features a photo of the band's drummer, Hannah Blilie.
Highly recommended.

Chumbawamba "Tubthumper" (1997)

Tubthumper
release date: Sep. 23, 1997
format: cd
[album rate: 3,5 / 5] [3,68]
producer: Chumbawamba, Neil Ferguson
label: EMI - nationality: England, UK

Track highlights: 1. "Tubthumping" (4 / 5) (live on Letterman) - 2, "Amnesia" (4 / 5) - 3. "Drip Drip Drip" - 5. "The Good Ship Lifestyle" - 7. "Outsider" - 10. "Smalltown" - 12. "Scapegoat"
[ full album playlist ]

8th studio album by Chumbawamba and the first on a major label. The nine-piece band-collective here are: Lou Watts on vocals, keyboards and as "nippy winger", Danbert "The Cat" Nobacon on vocals and as 'goalkeeper', Paul Greco on bass and as 'solid centre-back', Boff on guitar, vocals and as 'midfield dynamo', Jude Abbott on trumpet, vocals and as 'tigerish left-back', Alice Nutter on vocals and as 'team coach', Dunstan Bruce on vocals, percussion and as 'opportunist striker', and Harry Hamer on drums, programming and as 'hardened sweeper'. Neil Ferguson is also credited as band-member, although not depicted on the inlay band photo - he is credited playing keyboards, guitars, sponge & bucket.
The album was not the first I heard with the band as I already knew Anarchy (1994), which didn't make me more interested at the time but when I saw the animation movie "Shrek", I rediscovered the band. Of course I noticed the track "Tubthumping" - everyone did. I rediscovered the '94 album again, and all of a sudden I got it, a bit bewildered as to why I didn't get it in the first place. Anyway, this one is pretty neat. The album was seen as the band's commercial breakthrough, which was a difficult move for an anarchist band, and many of their "old" supporters criticised the band for selling out by signing with EMI. Apparently, the band argued that they live in a commercial world and that all record labels including their former label didn't care about their ideas, political stands, but only found the band interesting because of the potential profit. I really enjoy this one, and it makes me think of the early 80s British project-band Carter USM and its use of electronic to create alt. dance in a combo with stylistic bonds to punk rock and with a social stand, which again goes back to the late 70s more straight punk rock bands like Angelic Upstarts, Crass, and the like.
Chumbawamba has a strong critical view on capitalism, our Western lifestyle and modern consumerism, and in that positions itself like many others on a political far left-wing but unlike many other spokesmen, they do it with intelligent use of humour, brilliant lyrics and great songs. So the fact that they make use of all possible styles in a huge blend makes it very much their own blend. It's for one thing highly original but also good songwriting - and that's what music is about isn't it?!
I find this the band's best album.
Recommendable.

Hunters & Collectors "Hunters & Collectors" (1983)

Hunters & Collectors
release date: 1983
format: vinyl (V2260) / digital
[album rate: 3,5 / 5] [3,72]
producer: Hunters & Collectors; Mike Howlett (A1-A4)
label: Virgin Records - nationality: Australia

Track highlights: A) 1. "Towtruck" - 2. "Droptank" - 3. "Mouthtrap" - - B) 1. "Talking to a Stranger" (Remix) (other version) - 2. "Scream Who" - 3. "Run Run Run"

International album debut by Melbourne-founded Australian post-punk band Hunters & Collectors. Basically, the album is the band's international debut but it may also be regarded as a compilation as it combines the band's second ep Payload (1982) and the homonymous double vinyl ep debut from 1982, which had both been released exclusively for the Australian and New Zealand markets. The A-side contains all four tracks from Payload, and the B-side contains three tracks taken from album debut (tracks A1, B1 and D). At this early stage, the band line-up was already rather extensive, sometimes counting ten members. Here, they list seven: Mark Seymour on lead vocals & guitar, Ray Tosti-Guerra on guitar & vocals, John Archer on bass, Geoff Crosby on keyboards, Doug Falconer on drums, Greg Perano on percussion, and Robert Miles credited live sound & as art director. Later on, they were mostly eight official members and on their ninth and final studio album, Juggernaut (1998), the band counted nine members.
This is my first acquaintance with this fine Australian band, an album I purchased in '83 or early '84. I played this a lot back then and only later discovered that it was a compilations album - which it neither is after all.
It represents a fine mix somewhere in various directions of post-punk. There's an underlaying and ever-present darkness of gothic rock and at the same time a melodic sense of new wave and power pop, which in any case could be labelled indie rock at the time, but there's also elements from funk and something I would call garage rock, which really makes it a huge blend of styles, but it actually works like an original style of theirs, and to me, it fell nicely into a mix of Shriekback, Bauhaus, Gang of Four. and with some bonds to Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. However, the band soon changed its style to a more mainstream pop / rock style, which in a way seems influenced by bands like Rolling Stones, Genesis and Talking Heads, although, also maintaining a highly original Australian tone, and the band experienced commercial and international success with its fourth album out, Human Frailty (1986) and the album Demon Flower (1994).

Gang of Four "The Peel Sessions Album" (1990)

The Peel Sessions Album (compilation)
release date: 1990
format: cd (SFRCD107)
[album rate: 3,5 / 5] [3,42]
producer:  Bob Sargeant (1-8); Phil Stannard (9-11)
label: Strange Fruit - nationality: England, UK

Compilation album as well as a heavily enhanced reissue of the original The Peel Sessions album from 1986. The album nicely compiles three John Peel-sessions for the BBC on one album - the first four tracks are identical to the original 1986 ep release, then follows four tracks from the second session recorded Jul. 2, 1979, and ending with the last three tracks from the band's third session, recorded Mar. 9, 1981.
This is a fine compilation.

Ep by Gang of Four in the The Peel Sessions series by Strange Fruit Records. The original vinyl ep contains four tracks - in 1990 the album was issued as a digitally remastered cd issue, which basically is a different album containing eleven tracks.
Recorded: Jan. 9, 1979.
First Transmission: Jan. 18, 1979.

Peaches "Fatherfucker" (2003)

Fatherfucker
release date: Sep. 15, 2003
format: digital
[album rate: 3 / 5] [3,18]
producer: Peaches
label: XL Recordings - nationality: Canada

Track highlights: 1. "I Don't Give A ..." - 2. "I'm the Kinda" - 4. "Kick It" (feat. Iggy Pop) - 5. "Operate" - 7. "Shake Yer Dix" (feat. Mignon) (live)

2nd studio album by Peaches, again produced by herself, is bettering her 2000 album The Teaches of Peaches by being better produced and having better and more original material. Also, I like the stronger electroclash and dance-punk style on this.

Shriekback "The Infinite" (1984)

The Infinite (compilation)
release date: Mar. 1984
format: vinyl (KAZ LP 1) / digital
[album rate: 4 / 5]
producer: Shriekback
label: Kaz Records - nationality: England, UK

Tracklist: A side) 1. "Lined Up" - 2. "Clear Trails" - 3. "Accretions" - 4. "Sway" - 5. "Madness Into Method" - - B side) 1. "My Spine (Is the Bass Line)" - 2. "Mothloop" - 3. "Sexthinkone" (4,5 / 5) - 4. "Evaporation" (4,5 / 5) - 5. "A Kind of Fascination" - 6. "Working on the Ground"

A compilation album by Shriekback released on Kaz Records. This was the first album I came across with the band back in '84 or '85. I believe, I first found it at the library where I used to go at least once a week to find new music. Although, I was more into more direct punk rock, melodic new wave, and gloomy dark gothic rock, I found this more than just fine. I loved the disturbing tension of the arrangements, which made it cool, fascinating and rather alternative new wave post-punk in a sort of avantgardist kind of way. I didn't know anything of the band, and only discovered a decadeor so later that this is actually a compilation comprising singles and early releases. In fact, I tried hard to find other albums by the band but it was simply impossible at the time, as their albums were too hard to find in my country. A few years later, I also found the compilation album Evolution (1988), again at the library, but it didn't attract me the way this one did. The band never experienced any great success while releasing albums in the 80s but they have later on been praised for their early industrial sound, which has been an influence for electronic and industrial rock bands in the 1990s. Neither, was I familiar with The Pop Group but it appears quite evident that Shriekback must have listened to the Bristol band's debut Y from 1979 and / or the 1980 follow-up, which in retrospect has been regarded as a strong influence for other artist's works.
Shriekback continued to make albums throughout the '80s, '90s, and early 2000s (and may likely still perform) with an ever changing line-up. The core of the band was always former XTC keyboardist Barry Andrews, and former Gang of Four bassist Dave Allen, who got together with guitarist Dave Marsh and drummer Martyn Barker to form the initial and most persistent backbone of the band. Their commercial highs came with the more dance rock and funk rock-oriented albums Big Night Music (1986) and Go Bang! (1988) - albums I never found that enjoyable but that was the style they stuck with after leaving a distinct experimental expression.
This very album, however, is one that I have returned to many times since the 1980s. Far from all music of the '80s endure this long, and for me it holds a special position, like a hidden gem, and I think that the music still sounds fresh and fascinating. Especially tracks like "Sexthinkone" and "Evaporation" are in my mind true masterpieces with unique and extraordinary bass and drum-lines.

Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine "1992: The Love Album" (1992)

1992: The Love Album
release date: May 4, 1992
format: cd
[album rate: 4 / 5] [3,84]
producer: Sex Machine (aka Carter USM), Simon Painter
label: Chrysalis Records - nationality: England, UK

Track highlights: 2. "Is Wrestling Fixed?" (4 / 5) - 3. "The Only Living Boy in New Cross" - 4. "Suppose You Gave a Funeral and Nobody Came" (4,5 / 5) - 5. "England" - 6. "Do Re Me, So Far So Good" - 10. "The Impossible Dream"

3rd studio album release by London based duo Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine, or just: Carter USM, consisting of vocalist Jim Bob [aka Jim Morrison] and Fruitbat [aka Leslie Carter] on guitar and tapes. The style is an original alt. dance alt. rock combination with indie rock almost entirely seen in Britain. All tracks are written by Morrison and Carter except the end-track, which is a rearranged version of a 1965 song composed by Mitch Leigh, and with lyrics by Joe Darion (incorporated in the "Man of La Mancha" Broadway musical and later featured in the 1972 film of the same name starring Peter O'Toole).
The album was generally met by positive reviews and it ended up on top of the UK albums chart list, as it also did on NME's top 50 "Albums of the Year" in 1992.
This is, as far as I'm concerned, the duo's clearly best studio album, which was a pretty much overlooked international release. Not only is the music original, the lyrics have a social awareness angle with loads of humour, and they're political working class punk rock-minded anti-governmental.
It's one of the best albums in Britain in 1992.

Single release by The Clash. Despite the different track names, all tracks are actually remixes of the same track. The A-side of the 12'' are identical versions of the two tracks found on the 7'' single issue. Nationally, the single didn't perform too well, topping at number #47 on the singles chart list. Highest position was at number #9 on the Swedish chart list.
