Elvis Costello "This Year's Model" (1978)

org. cover
This Year's Model
release date: Mar. 17, 1978
format: vinyl / cd (1993 remaster Extended Play)
[album rate: 4,5 / 5] [4,38]
producer: Nick Lowe
label: Smash / Demon Records - nationality: England, UK

Track highlights: 1. "No Action" - 2. "This Year's Girl" - 4. "Pump It Up" - 5. "Little Triggers" - 8. "(I Don't Want to Go To) Chelsea" (live on later 2002) - 9. "Lip Service" (live) - 11. "Lipstick Vogue" - 12. "Night Rally"

2nd studio album by Elvis Costello released only eight months after his debut is like that produced by Nick Lowe and it was originally released by the newly-founded Radar Records. It follows closely the recipe of his first attempt, but it also adds more than just another layer to his repertoire. This is the first time Costello is backed by The Attractions consisting of bassist Bruce Thomas, Steve Nieve on piano and organ, and Pete Thomas on drums. The trio was founded by Costello in the fall of '77 as backing group for his live performances. The '93 Extended Play remaster series on Demon (issued by Rykodisc in the US) contains six bonus tracks including "Radio Radio", which had only been released as a standalone single, though included on the US version of the album.
The album was my first acquisition with Costello, and I think of it as one of his absolute best. He has written all songs on the album and compared to the highly original debut this is simply more of the same, and more on top of that. It has that certain Costello sneer-at-conformity, which made it perfect in a music world of punk rock rebelling against 'the old world', but it wasn't really - and Costello never was punk. His music shared the energy and simplicity with punk, but it was something else, which would soon be known as new wave - and that style was a broad term. Something that later would also come to describe Costello's early albums is power pop. A term I never quite understood as it's mostly used to categorise a particular form of energetic rock that is anything else than what people usually think of when speaking of pop music. Calling it power new wave or just something else would be better than using the term pop, which I guess all artists of new wave was rebelling against. Anyway, with This Year's Model Costello was on everyone's lips. Lyrically, the songs are witty and intelligent songwriting and at the same time, the music itself is so powerful and uniquely composed.
The album was met by critical acclaim and time has only stressed its importance as one the best British albums ever produced. It's naturally enlisted in "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" and in 2000, Q magazine placed the album at number 82 on its list of the "100 Greatest British Albums Ever". Rolling Stone magazine ranked it number 11 in 1987 on its list of the best albums of the period 1967-1987, and in 2003, the album was ranked number 98 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time".
Highly recommended.

"I was seriously thinking about hiding the receiver
when the switch broke as it's old
They're saying things that I can hardly believe
they really thinking we're getting outta control

Radio - is the sound salvation
Radio - is cleaning up the nation
They say you better listen to the voice of reason
But they don't give you any choice
'cause they think that it's treason
So you had better do as you're told
You better listen to the radio."

C.V. Jørgensen "En stynet strejfer" (1974)

En stynet strejfer
[debut]
release date: 1974
format: *cd (2004 remaster)
[album rate: 2,5 / 5] [2,72]
producer: non-produced (rec. with sound engineer Werner Scherrer)
label: Frituna - nationality: Denmark

Studio album debut by Danish singer / songwriter C.V. Jørgensen aka Carsten Jørgensen - in whose name the V is for 'Valentin' which is an artistic addition - originally released on the label Hookfarm.
C.V. Jørgensen is credited as songwriter and composer of all nine tracks, on on this he is backed by guitarist Ivan Sonne Horn, bassist Erik Falck, and by drummer Gert Smedegård Andreasen.
Musically, the album places itself far from Jørgensen's later releases by being a fairly experimental and psychedelic rock release (with some inspiration from The Mothers of Invention and Cream) as well as being folk rock-founded with clear inspiration in Bob Dylan. As songwriter, Jørgensen narrates in a contemporary stereotypical psychedelic style, which bears some of the same features as early compositions by Marc Bolan, and especially the lyrics by the two fellow-countrymen songwriter Leif Roden in Alrune Rod and Eik Skalø as heard on the landmark debut by Steppeulvene: Hip (1967).
The album didn't attract much recognition, and several tracks also sound like jam sessions in the studio without a clear direction - perhaps inspired by Captain Beefheart? - but on the other hand it's clear that the participating musicians are skilled instrumentalists, and already here, Jørgensen has a distinct original vocal quality, which attracts some attention to the lyrics.
In Jørgensen's discography, the album shares several similarities with the sequel T-Shirts, gummisko og terylenebukser (1975), and together they may be seen as part of his formative years on an artistic journey somewhat detached from his later style and works.
On the album here, the individual compositions at times sound like several connected ideas, where one melodic line is abruptly juxtaposed with another - which was probably an artistic choice that defined a certain music, which was not only chaotic, but nevertheless, could be seen as a result of an improvisational approach - again with some reference to the old Captain.
En stynet strejfer is an interesting piece of music history, which mostly functions as fan material.
*included on the compilation De 2 første ['The first two'] (2004), a 2-cd-release containing Jørgensen's first two albums.

Joy Division "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (1980) (single)

Love Will Tear Us Apart, 12'' single
release date: Jun. 1980
format: vinyl (FACT 23-12) / digital
[single rate: 4 / 5] [4,12]
producer: Martin Hannett
label: Factory Records - nationality: England, UK

Tracklist: A) 1. "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (5 / 5) - - B) 1. "These Days" - 2. "Love Will Tear Us Apart" [alternate take]

Single release by Joy Division released as 7'' single, Apr. '80.
This is their most beautiful and widespread 'pop'-song and only real radio hit. The A-side track has been covered by countless artists [see below] over the years but this is naturally the best version. None of the tracks figure on any official album releases apart from later compilations and on the second John Peel release.
Together with the single "Atmosphere" these are the last studio recordings by the band.

Best of 1976:
Jean-Michel Jarre "Oxygène" (1976)

Oxygène
release date: Dec. 1976
format: vinyl (1977 Scandinavia) / cd
[album rate: 5 / 5] [4,82]
producer: Jean Michel Jarre
label: Polydor Records - nationality: France

Tracklist: 1. "Oxygène (Part I)" - 2. "Oxygène (Part II)" - 3. "Oxygène (Part III)" - 4. "Oxygène (Part IV)" - 5. "Oxygène (Part V)" 6. "Oxygène (Part VI)"

3rd studio album by Jean-Michel Jarre, originally released on Disques Dreyfus, is the French avantgardist's surreal yet sublime masterpiece, which is a corner stone for all electronic music. I was just a little more than 10 years old when the album came out, but I remember it 'cause my older brother bought the album a few years later and he played it a lot. This is from a time when I first became aware of the many different qualities of various types of music. At the age of 14 I visited London for the first time, and today, more than 30 years later, I still recall many of the album titles that I brought back home from that trip, and this was just one of them. Jarre was ahead of his time, and it was like looking into the future when listening to his music. I still listened to ABBA and Boney M, so this was something quite different. The album is still fascinating as a modern classic, and it has probably inspired many electronic artists in the present time of the release but also in the many new shapes of electronic eras since then.
The album is the only album by Jarre to be enlisted in "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die".

Australian Crawl "Semantics" (1984)

Semantics (compilation)
release date: 1984
format: vinyl
[album rate: 3 / 5] [3,18]
producer: Mark Opitz
label: Geffen Records - nationality: Australia

Track highlights: 1. "The Boys Light Up" - 5. "Reckless (Don't Be So)" - 7. "White Limbo" - 9. "The Night"

Expanded ep or compilation by Australian Crawl. The band released an ep with the same title and cover containing just four songs but that album was soon reissued in a heavily expanded edition for the American market. The original Australian version has a playing order (1-4) with the tracks #5, #9, #7, and #4 on the American issue. The additional tracks are re-recorded compositions taken from the band's debut album The Boys Light Up (1980) and the second album Sirocco from (1981), which from my pov makes it a compilation.

David Bowie "David Bowie" (1967)

org. cover
David Bowie [debut]
release date: Jun. 1, 1967
format: digital
[album rate: 2,5 / 5] [2,38]
producer: Mike Vernon
label: Deram Records - nationality: England, UK

Studio debut album by David Bowie [aka David Robert Jones, Jan. 8, 1947 - Jan. 10, 2016, Brixton, Greater London]. Stylistically, this is far from what Bowie was later associated with - this is baroque pop and much closer to the music of artists like The Kinks, Tommy Steele, and (apparently) Anthony Newley. It also resembles the style of a later '67 debut album by Scott Walker - music inspired primarily by British acts with certain amounts of The Beatles with an addition of a certain psychedelic pop element without being too extravagant nor innovative. This was not music that tried to seek out new musical territories or recreate pop music itself. The album didn't stir up things and basically was a rather unnoticed release in the UK, and it's quite difficult to link this with his later works. The album really only is interesting for historical reasons and as fan material. Otherwise, the album is not recommended.

The Jam "All Mod Cons" (1978)

All Mod Cons
release date: Nov. 3, 1978
format: cd
[album rate: 4,5 / 5] [4,56]
producer: Vic Coppersmith-Heaven, Chris Parry
label: Polydor Records - nationality: England, UK

Tracklist: A) 1. "All Mod Cons" - 2. "To Be Someone (Didn't We Have a Nice Time)" (4 / 5) - 3. "Mr. Clean" (4 / 5) - 4. "David Watts" (4,5 / 5) (live) - 5. "English Rose" (5 / 5) - 6. "In the Crowd" (4 / 5) - - B) 1. "Billy Hunt" (4 / 5) - 2. "It's Too Bad" (5 / 5) (live) - 3. "Fly" (4 / 5) - 4. "The Place I Love" (5 / 5) - 5. "'A' Bomb in Wardour Street" (4 / 5) - 6. "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight" (5 / 5)
[ full album playlist ]

3rd album by The Jam was released on Polydor Records and like the two first studio albums it was produced by Vic Coppersmith-Heaven and Chris Parry. After the great debut album In the City (1977), the band released This Is the Modern World (Nov. '77) only six months later, and that album is by many considered the weakest album by The Jam [I think it's much better today than then], but then they went on and made this near masterpiece. The album doesn't contain a single weak track. All songs except "David Watts" (by Ray Davies, org. performed by 'The Kinks') are written by Paul Weller who had already established himself as one of the best regarded English songwriters, and the album went as high as to number #6 on the UK albums chart list and it was the first The Jam album to sell Gold. The style has transformed from what took its starting point in the aggressiveness of punk rock on the debut to a more unique mod revival sound which loans from new wave and power pop. The album is deservedly enlisted in "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die".

Luksus "Luksus" (ep) (1997)

Luksus
(ep) [debut]
release date: 1997
format: cd
[album rate: 3 / 5] [3,16]
producer: Tue Madsen & Mikael Simpson
label: Lidocaine Records - nationality: Denmark

Track highlights: 1. "Particularly Lucky" - 2. "I Miss You" - 3. "Stardust" - 4. "El Dorado"

Studio ep debut by Danish indie pop band Luksus cosisting of vocalist and guitarist Mikael Simpson, vocalist and keyboardist Lise Westzynthius, bassist Georg Rune Andersen, and drummer Henrik Vibskov. Three tracks (tracks #4, #5, and #6) are written and composed by Simpson, two tracks (tracks #1 and #2) are credited Westzynthius, and track #3 is by Simpson and Westzynthius. The album consists of six compositions with a total running length of just under 27 minutes.
Musically, the band doesn't walk new paths, but the combo of strong influences from Lush and The Smiths are obvious, and at times a bit unoriginal. Especially, the vocal performance by Westzynthius often appears as attempts to copying the vocal phrasing by Morrissey (listen to "Particularly Lucky" and "My Late Twin (Piano)" - on which she even mentions listening to the Smiths).

Julian Bream and John Williams "Together Again" (1974)

Together Again
release date: 1974
format: cd
[album rate: 4 / 5]

Tracklist: 1-3. Ferdinando Carulli: 'Serenade, Op. 96' - 4. Enrique Granados: 'Danza Española, No. 6' - 5. Isaac Albeniz: 'Bajo La Palmera, Op. 232' - 6. Enrique Granados: 'Danza Española Nr. 11' - 7. Mauro Giuliani: 'Variazioni Concertanti, Op. 130' - 8. Isaac Albeniz: 'Evocación'

3rd collaboration work with Julian Bream and John Williams. Before this they released the album Julian & John (1973), which seems much alike their first co-work, Together (1972) featuring interpretations of works by Lawes, Carulli, Albéniz, and Granados, and this one really just continues the same path, now without Lawes but with Giuliani. The quality is at the same high level.

Australian Crawl "Sons of Beaches" (1982)

Sons of Beaches
release date: Jul. 1982
format: vinyl / digital
[album rate: 3,5 / 5] [3,66]
producer: Mike Chapman
label: EMI - nationality: Australia

Track highlights: 1. "Runaway Girls" - 2. "Daughters of the Northern Coast" - 3. "Mid-Life Crisis" - 8. "Live Now, Pay Later" - 9. "Dianne" - 12. "(Not So) Happy Song for Problem Children"

3rd studio album by Australian rock band Australian Crawl follows one year after Sirocco, which had been nominated best Australian album of '81 at the Countdown Awards where lead vocalist of the band James Reyne won the prize as Most Popular Male Performer - as he also did in '82.
I heard the song (Not So) Happy Song for Problem Children on the national radio and simply had to check out the band. I found the album at a local record store around '83. I have always found that it's their very best song but in general, this album has a high standard and it contains a number of fine compositions. It is however, also the best album by Australian Crawl.

Julian Bream & John Williams "Together" (1972)

Together [debut]
release date: 1972
format: cd
[album rate: 4,5 / 5]

Tracklist: 1-3. William Lawes: 'Suite for Two Guitars' ('Corant') - 4-5. Ferdinando Carulli: 'Duo in G major' - 6-8. Fernando Sor 'L'encouragement' - 9. Isaac Albeniz: 'Cantos de Espana, Op. 232' - 10. Enrique Granados: 'Goyescas - Intermezzo' - 11 Manuel de Falla: 'Spanish Dance No. 1' - 12. Maurice Ravel: 'Pavane pour une infante défunte' - 13-18. Gabriel Faure: 'Dolly, Op. 56' - 19. Enrique Granados: 'Danzas espanolas, Op. 37'

1st collaboration work with these two great classical guitarists. Julian Bream is probably the best-known English classical guitarist playing Spanish guitar and lute. John Williams (not to be confused with the American classical conductor and composer of film music) is an Australian classical guitarist and like Bream mostly known for classical pieces for Spanish guitar. I came across this album around the late 1980s and has had an ear for Bream ever since.

Warm Guns "First Shot Live" (1979) (ep)

First Shot Live, ep
release date: 1979
format: vinyl (first pressing - WGLP1) / cd (1996 reissue)
[album rate: 3 / 5] [3,08]
producer: mixed by Lars Muhl, Werner Scherrer, Per Stan
label: Smash / CMC Records (reissue) - nationality: Denmark

Album ep debut by Danish new wave band Warm Guns from the city of Aarhus is a live album consisting of 7 tracks at a total playing time of 26 mins. The band consists of vocalist and primary composer Lars Muhl (also credited on piano), Jens G. Nielsen (who also plays drums in the band Gnags, and who is older brother to the artist Elisabeth Gjerluff Nielsen) on drums, Jacob Perbøll on bass, Per Møller on guitar and vocals, and with Lars Hybel on guitar and vocals. Well, at least that's how they are credited on the album. Fact is Lars Muhl is the band's lead vocalist, all others are singing backing vocals.
I purchased the album on vinyl back in the early '80s, and I was rather fond of it then. Now I think it's somewhat less interesting, and the album hasn't aged all to well. The band plays a British founded new wave, especially inspired by Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, Graham Parker, and The Knack, but also combined with a blend from American artists like Bruce Springsteen and Roy Orbison, it both sounds new and direct while maintaining something from the past. This particular album was recorded live in '78 at Aarhus Musik Teater.

Tante Fjas "Hello Josephine" (1987) (single)

Hello Josephine
, 7'' single
release date: 1987
format: vinyl
[single rate: 2 / 5] [2,14]
producer: ?
label: Generation Records - nationality: Denmark

Tracklist: A) "Hello Josephine" - - B) "Hello Josephine (Extra Fjas Ver.)"

Single release by Danish husband and wife act Tante Fjas consisting of 'Tage Fjas' (aka Leif Schouby) and 'Tante Fjas' (aka Evy Karitz). The song is a parodic version of the 1960 song "My Girl Josephine" by Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew.
This single was part of my parents' record collection and it was purchased after I left my childhood home, which means I only have little associations of this song stemming from some radio airplay during the late 80s. It never was a song I enjoyed or found valuable.

Pink Floyd "Atom Heart Mother" (1970)

Atom Heart Mother
release date: Oct. 10, 1970
format: cd
[album rate: 3 / 5]
producer: Pink Floyd, Norman Smith
label: Harvest Records - nationality: England, UK

Tracklist: 1. "Atom Heart Mother" - 2. "If" - 3. "Summer ´68" - 4. "Fat Old Sun" - 5. "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast"

5th studio album by Pink Floyd gave the band its first number #1 on the UK albums chart list. Musically, it's another experimental album introducing symphonic progressive with long classical sounding parts. The title track is an almost 24 min. long instrumental composition in 6 parts credited all band members and Ron Geesin. I think, the best and most memorable tracks here are "Summer '68", and "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast", but apart from that the band here demonstrates its technical skills and a focus on what is possible in a studio with quadraphonic sound recordings. The cover art is legendary, and is designed by Hipgnosis.

Bauhaus "Mask" (1981)

Mask
release date: Oct. 1981
format: cd
[album rate: 4 / 5] [4,12]
producer: Bauhaus
label: Beggars Banquet - nationailty: England, UK

Track highlights: 2. "The Passion of Lovers" (4,5 / 5) - 4. "Dancing" - 5. "Hollow Hills" (4 / 5) - 6. "Kick in the Eye" - 7. "In Fear of Fear" - 10. "Mask" (4,5 / 5)

2nd studio album by Bauhaus following one year after In the Flat Field is once again a release entirely produced by the band. They may appear to have changed record label but 4AD, who released the debut album as well as some of the band's early eps and singles, was a sublabel to Beggars Banquet as the mother company's 'testing ground' for upcoming artists, and as the debut had been met by critical acclaim, Bauhaus was moved to the mother company.
Mask is yet another strong and intense release of dark and sinister sounding gothic rock. What felt like a reminiscence of Joy Division on the debut is here completely gone, and the band has taken a rather original theatrical or: melodramatic step into darkness and depravity, and in some ways threads on paths that Marilyn Manson should much later investigate. This is an even stronger and more intense collection of songs than is heard on In the Flat Field, and it stands as one of the absolute best albums of gothic rock. The abum is the only Bauhaus album to be enlisted in "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die". The track "Passion of Lovers" was the first song I ever listened to by the band. I recorded it on tape from a radio programme, and I was absolutely fascinated by its intensity - demonstrating an originality in tension and atmosphere, which sounds fresh - even from a modern perspective.
The front cover of the album is a drawing by Daniel Ash.
Highly recommended.

Bauhaus "In the Flat Field" (1980)

In the Flat Field [debut]
release date: Oct. 1, 1980
format: cd
[album rate: 3,5 / 5] [3,62]
producer: Bauhaus
label: 4AD Records - nationality: England, UK

Track highlights: 1. "Double Dare" - 2. "In the Flat Field" - 3. "God in an Alcove" - 7. "St. Vitus Dance" - 8. "Stigmata Martyr"

Studio album debut by British gothic rock and post-punk band Bauhaus consisting of vocalist Peter Murphy, guitarist Daniel Ash, and the two brothers Haskins: bassist David J [aka David John Haskins], and (younger brother) drummer Kevin.
It's a very promising release with a highly original sound, which on the one hand appears to be inspired by post-punk forerunners like Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Cure, as well as by former artists of proto-punk and psychedelic rock, and in this fusion of their own darker style, which places the band as one of the very first to be referred to as playing gothic rock.
The album is by many critics considered the first gothic rock album. The album cover is by American photographer Duane Michals titled "Homage to Puvis de Chavannes".

release date: Jul. 1970
format: vinyl (BLL 903, Danish issue)
[single rate: 3,5 / 5] [3,28]
producer: Hank Medress, The Tokens
label: Bell Records - nationality: USA

Tracklist: A) "Candida" - - B) "Look At..."

Single release by American vocal / pop group Dawn (later known as Dawn featuring Tony Orlando, or: Tony Orlando & Dawn) both tracks taken from the debut album Candida (1970).
The title song was an international hit and topped the charts in several countries and remains their biggest hit. The single is from my parents' record collection given to me at some point in the mid or late 70s. I recall playing this as one of the stable singles on a portable turntable aged 7-10 years old. In hindsight, this is the type of soft pop music directed at parents to their offspring, who would instead listen to hard rock, psychedelic rock, or old school beat.

Single release by The Clash. Despite the different track names, all tracks are actually remixes of the same track. The A-side of the 12'' are identical versions of the two tracks found on the 7'' single issue. Nationally, the single didn't perform too well, topping at number #47 on the singles chart list. Highest position was at number #9 on the Swedish chart list.
