Janis Joplin "Pearl" (1971)

Pearl
udgivet: 11. jan. 1971
format: cd (1999 remaster) / vinyl (2020 reissue)
[vurdering: 4 / 5] [4,02]
producer: Paul A. Rothchild
selskab: Columbia - nationalitet: USA

Udvalgte numre: A) 1. "Move Over" - 2. "Cry Baby" (4,5 / 5) - 4. "Half Moon" - 5. "Buried Alive in the Blues"

udgivet: 25. sep. 2015
format: cd
[vurdering: 3,5 / 5] [3,58]
producer: Chief 1 (aka Lars Pedersen)
selskab: REO / Universal - nationalitet: Danmark

Tak for musikken, Johnny. Keep rockin'!

Brittany Howard "What Now" (2024)

What Now
release date: Feb. 9, 2024
format: digital (12 x File, FLAC)
[album rate: 4 / 5] [3,82]
producer: Brittany Howard, Shawn Everett
label: Island - nationality: USA

Track highlights: 1. "Earth Sign" - 2. "I Don't" - 3. "What Now" - 4. "Red Flags" - 5. "To Be Still" - 8. "Prove It to You" - 9. "Samson" - 11. "Power to Undo" - 12. "Every Color in Blue"

2nd solo album by Brittany Howard is the more than four year old follow-up to Jaime (Sep. 2019). Bassist Zac Cockrell of Alabama Shakes is credited on this, just as he featured on her solo debut, which also counts drummer Nate Smith as recurring musician. The album was generally made with only a handful of performers, which include the two keyboardists, Lloyd Buchanan and Paul Horton, and aside from these four only guitarist Brad Williams and trumpeter Rod McGaha feature on two songs each.
What Now is showcasing all the various styles Howard seems influenced by, but under her guidance it never feels as too many styles have been involved. Actually, to me, this is a bit like echoing how Prince used to arrange songs with that little detail that this is ever so much better. What Now simply appears as Brittany Howard's best release in her post-Alabama Shakes period. Now why doesn't she release music more often?! Ah well, better have a great album than one with only a few good songs, and this one is a most delightful release despite containing songs about negative aspects of life such as climate changes, global crisis, and political climate / turmoil of her home country, and then: these are appropriate subjects to address at the current time, so better deal with what's at stake. And thanks to Howard's musicality, she manages to wrap her songs up in great music and ultimately, simply hands us one of this year's best albums.
This is highly recommended and one to pay attention to.

Shocking Blue "Send Me a Postcard" (1968) (single)

l-r.: Cor van der Beek, Mariska Veres
Klaasje van der Wal, Robbie van Leeuwen
Send Me a Postcard
, 7'' single
release date: Dec. 14, 1968
format: vinyl (IMA 1002) (1970 issue)
[single rate: 4 / 5] [3,78]
producer: Shocking Blue
label: I. M. A. Records - nationality: The Netherlands

Tracklist: A) "Send Me a Postcard" (4,5 / 5) - - B) "Harley Davidson"

Single release by Dutch rock band Shocking Blue originally released on Pink Elephant in '68 and released for the Scandinavian market with this issue in 1970. The single appears to be the band's only third single and it's one of three consecutive non-album single releases following the band's album debut Shocking Blue (Nov. 1967). The band was formed in '67 and went through changing line-ups with a different output starting with music influenced by The Beatles and a folk pop style as expressed by American quartet Brothers Four, but from '68 when Mariska Veres became the band's lead vocalist after founding member Fred de Wilde left, the band changed style to a bolder psychedelic rock founded in American West Coast blues rock. For this single, the band consists of new member vocalist Marika Veres, and the three founding members: lead guitarist and main songwriter Robbie van Leeuwen, bassist Klaasje van der Wal, and drummer Cor (Cornelis) van der Beek. Both tracks are credited van Leeuwen, and the single became an international hit, which was perceived as a fine attempt with a mix of styles exemplified by Jefferson Airplane and The Doors.
The band continued up until 1974 when songwriter and composer van Leeuwen left to concentrate on his newly formed band Galaxy-Lin, and Shocking Blue then released its final album Good Times (1974) after which Mariska Veres left to pursue a solo career and the band split. Shocking Blue reformed in 1980 in their classic line-up and stayed together until '97 when van Leeuwen now left for good, and from hereon and up until 2006 the band was continued around Veres and new lead guitarist André van Geldorp with a changing line-up. The band was put to an abrupt end Dec. 2006 as Mariska Veres died from newly detected cancer.
Shocking Blue was much more than just a few single hits, and among them definitely Send Me a Postcard - they showed an alternative to American and British psychedelic rock, which isn't just covers and copy, and together with Danish band Savage Rose, they stand as a strong European contribution to the vast pool of rock and to the formation and the development of psychedelic rock of the 1970s.

This Swedish issue of the single, released three months after the band's third album Scorpio's Dance (Sep. 1970), was part of my older brother's record collection, and it's a single I vividly recall from age 10-14 years of age - and at that time, it was one of my absolute favourite rock songs.

Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band "Trout Mask Replica" (1982)

Trout Mask Replica
release date: Jun. 16, 1969
format: digital (28 x File, FLAC) (2021 remaster)
[album rate: 3,5 / 5] [3,66]
producer: Frank Zappa
label: Zappa Records / Bizarre Industries - nationality: USA

Track highlights: 1. "Frownland" - 2. "The Dust Blows Forward 'n the Dust Blows Back" - 4. "Ella Guru" - 6. "Moonlight on Vermont" - 7. "Pachuco Cadaver" - 12. "My Human Gets Me Blues" - 14. "Hair Pie: Bake 2" (instr.) - 16. "Well" - 17. "When Big Joan Sets Up" - 18. "Fallin' Ditch" - 21. "Orange Claw Hammer" - 22. "She's Too Much for My Mirror" - 25. "The Blimp (Mousetrapreplica)" - 28. "Veteran's Day Poppy"

3rd studio album by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band (here: a sextet) follows 8 months after the album Strictly Personal (Oct. 1968). As a start, let's just conclude that this very album is 'beyond'... Just beyond... anything! It's unlike anything else, and for that alone, it's worth paying attention to. Whether you like the content - its musical statement - or not, because it tampers with the idea of music as such. At the point of the release, I guess people thought of it as a band effort and generally thinking of Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band as a unit of sorts - like that of The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and / or Frank Zappa and the Mothers - without comparison but with the idea of a band with a leader, and in this case with Don Van Vliet fronting His Magic Band (sometimes refered to as 'The Magic Band'). And to some extent that perception makes sense; and then on the other hand, when comparing His Magic Band over the years, it appears much more of a one-man project with shifting collaborators - of sorts. Yes, a few of these reappear over many albums but already here, only drummer & percussionist John French plays on all three albums up until this point. Guitarist John Cotton (here credited as 'Antennae Jimmy Semens') was included in the band on the predecessor but this is the first with guitarist Bill Harkleroad (credited as 'Zoot Horn Rollo'), bassist Mark Boston (credited as 'Rockette Morton'), and bass clarinet player Victor Hayden (credited as 'The Mascara Snake') - alledgedly, names that Van Vliet came up with. The album was released as a double vinyl album on Straight Records and with Frank Zappa as sound engineer and producer. Much has been said about this specific album. There are testimonies indicating that much of the recordings were taped live in the studio, or with the band playing instruments in one room and with Don Van Vliet contributing with vocals in another room. And then there's the story of how an untrained Van Vliet composed and made the basics of the songs on a piano (an instrument he didn't know how to play) after which John French transcribed Vliet's instrumental pieces into musical notations that he then handed out to individual instrumentalists to play on their instrument in whatever way the music had been transcribed to fit the specific instrument. Other ideas were used as creative ideas such as having the individual band members sit in isolated rooms playing their part while they couldn't hear the others - same approach was used for recording Vliet's vocal, which resulted in out-of-sync passages that were used as they were recorded, and then there are stories suggesting that Van Vliet insisted on day-long rehearsals which included sleep deprivation and little food intakes to maximize attention to the individual parts - as a way to become a part of the instrument itself.
I first came across this album in the early 80s at the local library. I was immediately attracted by the front cover, which I somehow found appealing. That cover told me what was inside it, was something special. I took the album home and understood absolutely nothing of it and thought of it as unappealing chaotic noise - a mistake. Over the years, I have come across the album at various stages of my life, and each time, I have discovered something new about it, found out that little bit more - and found it increasingly more fascinating. Needless say, the album is longtime a musical treasure and the good old Captain Beefheart has become an icon.
The album wasn't a big contemporary success - hardly any of Captain Beefheart albums experienced major commercial success, although, this one did reach number #21 in the UK. In retrospect however, none of his albums have been rejected as musical failures, which I guess has to do with Van Vliet's mission as an artists: to create music free of conventions [this is not a statement by Van Vliet but my assessment]. There's no doubt that Van Vliet was inspired by early American music and he is nonetheless regarded as one the most genuine original blues rock vocalists. As a composer, he was quite unconventional and an untamed figure. He was always motivated by ideas of creativity and has always found his music labelled as avant-garde. Yes, it's experimental but he appears to have been inspired by free jazz and world music, and what he pursued was perhaps a confrontation of the perception of how music is established as a concept. Why and when do we understand something as music?
Trout Mask Replica is a... wonderous one-of-a-kind release. It's an extensive listen with around 80 mins. playing time. Some regard it as a stunning masterpiece, others see it as more of a non-sensical piece of formative artistic matter. The latter group of people, I find, often reject the album instantly, or quite early. Regardless, how people experience the album, there's no doubt that artists have and will continue to be inspired by its ideas and its output, which in essence comes from an unrestricted form. The album consists of 28 fragments of music - some tracks may sound alike and yet they all give you a taste of patternless music, paradoxically, with obvious traits of patterns. An overwhelming thing about it is that it was produced in 1969 and still sounds as something quite new. And did I mention, it's experimental? Actually, it's quite experimental and could be a bit of overwhelming to listen to in one long take. I'm still in doubt about how to regard it entirely - I guess, I might never will, I'm not a genius but not few have called Van Vliet just that. He may have been living in a period of acid heads but his ideas still made a lot of sense. Just the title of the album is something, isn't?! What is a 'trout mask'? And then a 'replica'! "Ah, the good old 'trout mask' but as a replica! The title itself plays with conception of an idea, of what is art and what sense does it make when we roll a dice and change the rules?
The album is not entirely a pleasant listen, but it surely has its moments. Fragments are there, binding it together for an instant before dissolving and reappearing as something else. Rhythm patterns are not continous. Nothing is. It means, you probably won't be listening to this as a nice background tapestry for any social arrangement. You may not want to put it on while driving with your family, and so on. It's something that require your attention. Pieces and fragments are both funny and absolutely strong. As something with music pleasure potential, I would hand it 1 out of 5 stars. I'm still thinking 4 out 5 and understand critics who see it as 5 / 5 when you see it as a statement that challenges out perception of how music is constructed. And then I land on 3,5 / 5 because of its musical 'qualities'... though, what is quality when speaking of music? And this is the kind of questions you may have to ask yourself when listening to this, which basically proves its worth. I really enjoy it but for various reasons and at various times.
Definitely recommended.

The Gun Club "Lucky Jim" (1993)

Lucky Jim
release date: Sep. 1993
format: cd
[album rate: 3,5 / 5] [3,58]
producer: Jeffrey Lee Pierce, Peer Rave
label: Solid Records - nationality: USA

Track highlights: 1. "Lucky Jim" - 2. "A House Is Not a Home" - 3. "Cry to Me" - 6. "Idiot Waltz" - 7. "Up Above the World" - 8. "Day Turn the Night" - 10. "Desire" - 11. "Anger Blues"

6th and final studio album by The Gun Club follows 3 years after Pastoral Hide & Seek (Oct. 1990), 2 years after the Divinity (ep), and 1½ years after the Jeffrey Lee Pierce project-album Ramblin' Jeffrey Lee & Cypress Grove with Willie Love (Mar. 1992). Since the 1990 album, The Gun Club has been reduced to a trio as guitarist Kid Congo Powers left to pursue his own project-band, Congo Norvell. The trio here consists of Jeffrey Lee Pierce on vocals and guitar, Romi Mori on bass, and with Nick Sanderson on drums, who once again had been out, but returned for this.
You could argue that the band's style hasn't evolved much since The Las Vegas Story from 1984 but as practically no-one else sounds quite like The Gun Club, nor like Jeffrey Lee Pierce, that's not really something you could hold against them. The garage rock and bluesy rawness has subsided somewhat on the account of an old-school Hendrix-like guitar-founded blues rock tone. In an interview with Louder, Pierce's girlfriend Romi said, she found that Pierce became increasingly obsessed on playing the guitar - he had a Hendrix-thing going on, and she felt it took away some of the qualities in his vocal performance [Louder interview, also with Kid Congo Powers]. The relationship between Pierce and Romi is said to have come to an end during the recordings of the album, which didn't make things easier. Pierce's lacking health saw him hospitalised several times and he has been described as hallucinating more than usually. Musical simplicity, however, remains on the album and there's still an edgy tone to the music and the fragile / desperate voice of Pierce is found on top of all compositions. It's by no means poor or mediocre, I just miss that unspecified greatness in larger doses, which is something else than melancholic despair, but the album surely has its moments - and then it reveals a new level of guitar skills, which here is handled by Pierce.
A year later, Pierce and Romi had split for good - she now befriended Sanderson and together they founded the band Freehat (around 1999) with ex-members Jim Reid and Ben Lurie of The Jesus and Mary Chain. Pierce relocated to the US, to his father's house and to him to be looked after in the attempts of sobering up. Here, Pierce managed to write his memoirs, and he also made attempts in early '96 of finding new musicians to reform The Gun Club, which never materialised, and in late March, three years following Lucky Jim, Jeffrey Lee Pierce himself called it a day, as he was found dead - his body gave in, posssibly resulting from a life-style that included long-time heroin addiction and with various deceases as side-effects.
Lucky Jim is not the band's best, nor its worst. It's a genuine The Gun Club-album and as such quite fascinating stuff. Lee Pierce had been a youngster dreaming of being someone doing wild things, or actually: he wanted very much to become someone like William S. Burroughs, or Charles Bukowski, more than a rock'n'roll- icon. He wanted to be be out there living his life as a drunk and as a heroin addict, simply because he idolised that lifestyle on the extreme edge. He soon ended there himself and never really came back. People around him were shocked, petrified, or struck by his otherness, his vigor, his appetite, and his ramblings - and no matter what, he left us with enduring original fine music.

Thin Lizzy "Wild One - The Very Best of Thin Lizzy" (1996)

Wild One - The Very Best of Thin Lizzy (compilation)
release date: Jan. 9, 1996
format: cd
[album rate: 4 / 5]
producer: various
label: Vertigo Records - nationality: Ireland

A compilation album by Thin Lizzy released as a 10 years commemoration tribute to Phil Lynott, who passed away Jan. 1986. Now, this is a mighty fine collection of 19 tracks featuring both hard rock energetic rock classics and more soft rock ballads. It represents most of Lynott's career in Thin Lizzy and also contains the early Thin Lizzy classic "Whiskey in the Jar" a traditional arranged by Lynott, Bell and Downey that many associate with the band but which wasn't released on any of their studio albums. And then there are two live recordings showcasing the strength of the band's live performances.
This compilation probably isn't the best with the band but it's also a rather impossible task to make the one best of compilation with a band, who has been through such diverse stages. Some people really like their early works, others prefer the simplistic hard rock-period, and even in that segment you'll find various preferences - some will enjoy the heavy metal-sound and others the twin-guitar harmonies - and then there's the big portion of pop rock-balladry that have found way to another segment of fans. And you  just cannot satisfy them all. Some will have an affection for the Eric Bell-period, the Robertson-Gorham period, the Gary Moore-influence, and the Snowy White-era. You'll find dozens of best of albums, some 2-disc compilations, some even more extensive but they probably won't feel completely satisfactory anyway. I like the 2020 3-disc Essential issued by Universal, which in a way is like an extended version of the album mentioned here, as it both gives room for classics from various stages, including hard rockers, softer ballads, and some live versions - only with a broader repertoire - but to imagine that you will be able to go out and find a single-disc or a single vinyl album containing the best songs is not likely.

Ramblin' Jeffrey Lee & Cypress Grove with Willie Love "Ramblin' Jeffrey Lee & Cypress Grove with Willie Love" (1992)

2006 remaster
Ramblin' Jeffrey Lee & Cypress Grove with Willie Love
release date: Mar. 1992
format: cd (2006 remaster)
[album rate: 3,5 / 5] [3,32]
producer: Jeffrey Lee Pierce
label: Flow Records - nationality: USA

Studio album by The Gun Club frontman Jeffrey Lee Pierce recorded in between albums with his primary band and released as Ramblin' Jeffrey Lee & Cypress Grove with Willie Love. Jeffrey Lee plays guitar and sings together with guitarist Cypress Love and drummer Willie Love. Carl La Fong isn't credited on the album but he appears to playing the bass. The majority of the tracks are cover versions of classic blues songs written by various artists, which include Don Nix, Willie Brown, and Chester Burnett. The songs are all well-played and cleverly arranged, and despite the fact that the original blues isn't really my kinda style, this is quite originally sounding with a lot of genuine heartfelt craftsmanship to it, so to ignore it would be a shame. I like it, It's gooood.
The 2006 remaster comes with the additional title: "9 Lives No. 5" indicating nine releases made by Flow Records to pay tribute to Pierce - the '9 lives' of course referring to how Pierce managed to stay alive, when others would've surcumbed earlier being exposed to what he went through.

Brittany Howard "Jaime" (2019)

Jaime [debut]
release date: Sep. 20, 2019
format: digital (11 x File, FLAC)
[album rate: 3,5 / 5] [3,55]
producer: Brittany Howard
label: ATO Records - nationality:

Track highlights: 2. "He Loves Me" (live session) - 3. "Georgia" - 4. "Stay High" (live session) - 6. "Short and Sweet" - 7. "13th Century Metal" (live session) - 9. "Goat Head" - 10. "Presence"

Studio solo debut album by Alabama Shakes front-figure, Brittany Howard. Well, actually she made the full-length album work already in Sep. 2015 under the moniker of Thunderbitch, which was more of a musical project, where Jaime should be regarded as her actual solo debut. Howard is in complete control as she has written and composed all tracks and also produced it.
In Alabama Shakes the music is a tight mixture of warm and energetic r&b, blues rock, and soul, which also is a mixture you will find here, but on top of that this is much more complex in terms of styles. She blends all that with jazz rock, hip hop, contemporary r&b, and art pop to make her own conglomerate of styles and genres and succeeding without sounding forced or too varied.
Jaime has been met by critical acclaim and it peaked at number #13 on the US Billboard 200 and topping the US Americana / Folk albums chart list.
The musical arrangements and stylistic complexity immediately had me thinking of St. Vincent, but it's rather unfair to point at comparisons 'cause Howard only proves her artistic originality and worth, which pays tribute to the American heritage of great artists of jazz, soul, r&b as well as a great variety of modern performers of pop music.

The Gun Club "Divinity" (ep) (1991)

Divinity
(ep)
release date: Aug. 1991
format: cd
[album rate: 3,5 / 5] [3,48]
producer: Jeffrey Lee Pierce
label: New Rose Records - nationality: USA

Track highlights: 1. "Sorrow Knows" - 2. "Richard Speck" - 3. "Keys to the Kingdom" - 4. "Black Hole" - 6. "Yellow Eyes" (Live) - 7. "Hearts" (Live)

EP release by The Gun Club following 10 months after Pastoral Hide & Seek (Oct. 1990). The album was originally released as a 7-track double vinyl ep consisting of 4 new compositions and 3 live tracks stemming from the band's farewell tour from a concert in France. The cd issue comes with 8 tracks, adding a remix of "St. John the Divine", a song that appears in its original version on Pastoral... - with the three live tracks put at the end of the cd. The band's drummer Nick Sanderson had left the band after Pastoral..., and back here is Desi (aka Desi Desperate, aka Peter Kablean), who previously stood in as an untrained substitute to handle drums on the final performances for the band's farewell concerts in Dec. '84 as Terry Graham already left before Jeffrey Lee Pierce then finally broke up the band. Pierce and girlfriend and bassist Romi Mori stayed in Amsterdam but Kid Congo Powers is now back on guitar, and with Desi these four constitute the new quartet. This is however, the final release with Powers, who should leave again the following Spring of '92.
Dvinity appears to have been made at point when Pierce wanted to record a follow-up to the 1990 album but apparently had been unable to write enough material for a normal album. Also, it seems that Pierce went through a rough period with poor health due to his substance abuse. Anyway, all four new compositions are strong songs that recount some of the characteristics of the band, but the album is a strange breed. The first half takes you into the sensation of what could've been another full-length and then a new mix of an old song, which basically sounds like the original, but it transports you elsewhere before we enter three good live recordings, which in a way both document the energy in the vocal and instrumental performance / the very presence of Jeffrey Lee Pierce, yet also show us another side of the coin of a former great unity, which just isn't the same as the starting point of the album. The end-track is a live version of "Fire of Love" from Miami which in a way takes the sound downstairs in a muddy and distorted chaos of what sound more like a bad recording.
Divinity is a difficult album to review, but I think it will of course appeal to die-hard fans, but for others, it probably could feel like something is missing out. After this, Pierce' condition saw him hospitalised and the band activity was on a halt, although, the line-up once again went through some changes. Desi  was replaced by Simon Fish in early '92, shortly after, Powers left for good, and in early '93 the band was back as a trio of Pierce, Mori, and with Sanderson back on drums - ready to record what would turn out to be the band's final album, Lucky Jim (1993).

5th studio album by The Gun Club follows three years after Mother Juno (Oct. 1987), and what's quite interesting is that the line-up is the exact same quartet as on the '87 album with songwriter, guitarist and lead vocalist Jeffrey Lee Pierce, guitarist Kid Congo Powers, bassist Romi Mori (girlfriend of Pierce), and drummer & percussionist Nick Sanderson. That said, Kid Congo had left the band to play with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds after Mother Juno, but after his return in the Spring of '90, Pierce soon made arrangements for the recordings ofwhat was to be this album. It's the second in the new formation of the band after Pierce had put an end to the band and initiated a solo career. Also, by the end of the year, Sanderson left to concentrate on another music project - all of this showing how this band never was in a stable period without members leaving, returning, or with someone being sacked. The album is the second recorded and released exclusively in Europe alone. At this point, the band, or at least Pierce and Mori appear to have being relocated to Amsterdam. As usual, Pierce is only songwriter and composer of all tracks, and this time he has also put himself in the producer seat. The resulting soundscape may not be that impressive but the style is certified The Gun Club - a style connected so much to Jeffrey Lee Pierce, his poignant vocal, his characteristic guitar-sound that no matter who he invites to play with him sounds crystallised as The Gun Club, and that is more than just sufficient. I've all ways linked The Gun Club with the music of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds and all days found The Gun Club that little bit more interesting - or perhaps: showcasing something with  greater potential. In a contemporary perspective I didn't put this band among my favourites - I liked it, though, but may have neglected its qualities because of the lo-fi production, and the ever-present component of country and blues. I think, I might have put the band alongside artists like Adrian Borland, Bob Mould, R.E.M. etc. [without comparison whatsoever!] had I acknowledged it as much as I did later on. Fact is, I just listened to much else back then and The Gun Club was somewhere in the periphery: interesting and fine but never really 'it'. After this, Powers returned to the US - reputedly to get clean but stayed a member until '92 when he left to focus on a solo project of his; however, Mori and Pierce remained in Amsterdam with Pierce increasingly affected from heavy substance-addiction, also when heading into a studio in Belgium to record the band's final album, Lucky Jim (Sep. 1993).
In retrospect, there's no doubt that Jeffrey Lee Pierce definitely had 'it', and that he proved it over and over again. Better late than never, but fact is, I have come to understand why he became an artists' favourite and also a music critics' icon. This album doesn't contain obvious fillers, and in my mind, and in a close race with The Las Vegas Story (Jun. 1984), I find this to be one of the band's finest.
Highly recommended.

A very strong and up-tempo studio album by Wilmer X in their classic and characteristic blues rock rock & roll combo. Unfortunately, this was only issued in digital format. This is one of their better albums.

Zucchero "All the Best" (2007)

All the Best (compilation)
release date: Nov. 23, 2007
format: digital (2-disc)
[album rate: 3,5 / 5]

Released as 'Zucchero Sugar Fornaciari'. This is a fine double compilation album if you don't have Zucchero in your collection. It contains 35 tracks most of which are in Italian. It also contains "Wonderful Life", a song by British singer Black from his debut album Wonderful Life (1987), also released as a cover version by Zucchero as a single release earlier in 2007, which didn't make it to an album but was a rather big hit, again as it was for Black.
This is a highly recommended album.

Zucchero Sugar Fornaciari' "Fly" (2006)

Fly
release date: Sep. 22, 2006
format: cd
[album rate: 3,5 / 5]

Track highlights: 1. "Bacco perbacco" - 2. "Un kilo" - 3. "Occhi" (4 / 5) - 6. "È delicato" - 7. "L'amore è nell'aria" - 10. "Troppa fedeltà"

Released as 'Zucchero Sugar Fornaciari'. A fine return to a more singer / songwriter universe. Mind you, the changes are not big, Zucchero still plays blues and pop soul but the album is more subtle and emotional. My favourite is "Occhi" but it has several fine tracks. The release comes in various versions. There's an international English version having a different tracklist, and e.g. "Flying Away", an English version of "Occchi", among others. A bonus track version also exists, which includes most of the different versions.

The Gun Club "Mother Juno" (1987)

Mother Juno
release date: Oct. 19, 1987
format: cd (2006 remaster)
[album rate: 3,5 / 5] [3,64]
producer: Robin Guthrie
label: Flow Records (Remaster) - nationality: USA

Track highlights: 1. "Bill Bailey" - 3. "Lupita Screams" - 4. "Yellow Eyes" - 5. "The Breaking Hands" (5 / 5) - 6. "Araby" - 7. "Hearts" - 8. "My Cousin Kim"

4th studio album by The Gun Club originally released on Red Rhino is the band's first release after its reformation and it follows more than three years after The Las Vegas Story (Jun. 1984). Between these two, Jeffrey Lee Pierce released his solo album debut Wildweed in the Spring of '85, but for this he has reformed the band in a line-up featuring guitarist Kid Congo Powers, bassist Romi Mori (lead guitar on track #4), and with drummer Nick Sanderson. Pierce has written and composed all tracks and the band still sounds like no one else. Blixa Bargeld of The Bad Seeds plays guitar on "Yellow Eyes".
It's quite amazing how the band seems to just continue where the 1984 album ended considering that one half of the band wasn't taking part in the making of that particular album. I never got hold of any of their original albums at the time of their release, but Mother Juno was an album I found at the local library but didn't quite appreciate in '87. The only album that I really liked was The Las Vegas Story from 1984. The version, I have purchased of Mother Juno is a remastered edition including the bonus disc titled "The Berlin Tapes", which seems like a nice find. "The Breaking Hands" is a marvelous track - fans of the band would probably call it over-produced, and it IS a strange cocktail to have Robin Guthrie as album producer but Pierce apparently had his own ideas about The Gun Club, also when keeping in mind that the band's second album Miami was produced by guitarist Chris Stein of Blondie. And Pierce had been entrigued by Guthrie. Alledgedly, Romi and Pierce had met Guthrie and Liz Frazer of the Cocteau Twins at a music festival and from that positive meeting, Pierce had found a gateway to get in touch with Guthrie and ask him to produce an upcoming new album. Pierce and Mori were at this point a couple, and Pierce had relocated to Berlin as the band found it more attractive to play and perform in Europe as the band simply had more fans here. Also, Cave and the Bad Seeds, with whom Powers had played with, were mostly hanging out in Berlin.
Stylewise, The Gun Club and Cocteau Twins are nowhere near one another, nor with regards to genre for that matter but I really like this album as it has a fine delicate feel of garage rock, the ever-present hesitating energy of Pierce, and a productional side that tries to catch up and embrace it all and yet still leaves room for all the quirkiness.
The front cover is a painting by Danish-born artists Claus Castenskiold, who also fronts several releases by British punk rock band The Fall.
Recommended.

Tom Waits "Bad as Me" (2011)

Bad as Me
release date: Oct. 24, 2011
format: cd
[album rate: 4 / 5] [4,12]
producer: Tom Waits & Kathleen Brennan
label: ANTI- - nationality: USA

Track highlights: 1. "Chicago" (4 / 5) - 2. "Raised Right Men" (4 / 5) - 3. "Talking at the Same Time" - 4. "Get Lost" (4,5 / 5) - 6. "Pay Me" - 7. "Back in the Crowd" - 8. "Bad as Me" (4,5 / 5) - 10. "Satisfied" (4 / 5) - 12. "Hell Broke Luce" (5 / 5) - 13. "New Year's Eve"

17the studio album by Tom Waits following Real Gone (2004) with seven full years.
What a comeback album! Everyone should own a copy. Much of what makes it so great is Waits ability to combine all the styles he has experimented with over four decades into one harmonious release. Bad as Me contains vocal jazz, electric blues rock, cabaret music with ties to Kurt Weill, and it contains experimental art rock tunes linking to Captain Beefheart - all of this mixed well and thoroughly together into single compositions, as well as being poured over the entire album.
Still, there are quite big differences between the individual tracks and there is of course the special Tom Waits touch to hold it all together. Also, I think this is the first time he really succeeds with his most experimental expression since Swordfishtrombones (1983) and through it manages to create songs of the highest quality.
As of 2018 Bad as Me remains Waits' most recent studio album and should it be his final album, it's definitely a fine work to end an astonishing career.
Highly recommended.

Track highlights: 1. "Amidinine (My Friend)" (4 / 5) (live - live - acoustic live) - 3. "Azamane Tiliade (The Era of Young Girls)" - 6. "Adinat (People)" - 7. "Her Tenere (In the Desert)" - 9. "Aman (Water)" - 11. "Tamiditine (My Darling)"

2nd international studio album by Omara 'Bombino' Moctar (aka Goumar Almoctar) following his 2011 album Agadez. Bombino was born in Niger and fled with his father and grandmother to Algeria when he was ten, where he initated his musicial upbringing before returning to Niger in '97 and his professional career started. When the Tuareg Rebellion erupted in 2007 he moved to Burkina Faso until the conflict settled in 2010 and he once again returned to his homeland. Bombino's playing style reflects his musical upbringing listening to cassettes with Jimi Hendrix and Mark Knopfler, reggae-influenced African contemporaries as well as the stylistic impressions from Tuareg guitarist Haja Bebe, who has been a musical teacher of his.
Nomad is a warm and beautiful mix of Western musical influence and a variety of African tradition - it's smooth and meandering and it comes with a solid flavour of the blues.

Tom Waits "Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers, & Bastards" (2006)

Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers, & Bastards
(compilation)
release date: Nov. 20, 2006
format: cd (3-disc box set)
[album rate: 3,5 / 5]
producer: Kathleen Brennan, Tom Waits
label: ANTI- - nationality: USA

A compilation album, and there's some when a man has made music very consistently for four decades. This is not the usual Best of kind of release. First thing that differs is that it's a box set of 3 discs. Well, that should maybe do it in comprising his long career but that's not really the way it has been compiled. Apparently, Waits had wanted a release with some of the songs that had been left out of albums throughout the years and he intended to make a slow ballad-like disc of all his softer songs and a raw and ferocious disc with his energetic complementary side, but then Brennan came up with the idea of three discs 'cause they also needed room for the ones that didn't fit either of the two labels. So the songs are intentionally placed according to style and temper, so that the first disc of "Brawlers" are tracks that rock. They are his blues rock and most poignant rock tunes. The second disc of "Bawlers" is a collection of singer / songwriter ballads and vocal jazz songs, as many of his albums contain these two complementary tempers, and the last disc of "Bastards" is reserved for his experimental cabaret and art rock... or you could say the ones that don't fit in - the most... 'crazy' stuff, perhaps. In this way it's a fine box set, and it's a rare compilation that makes it all a whole, although the individual songs have been written in different periods of time, so according to your mood and / or interest, one may select a specific musical style.
