The American Breed "Bend Me, Shape Me" (1967) (single)

Bend Me, Shape Me
, 7'' single
udgivet: 1967
format: vinyl (KSS 6)
[vurdering: 4 / 5] [3,78]
producer: Bill Traut
selskab: Stateside - nationalitet: USA

Numre: A) "Bend Me, Shape Me" (4 / 5) (alt. mix) - - B) "Mindrocker"

Single med The American Breed taget fra det bandets kommende andet album Bend Me, Shape Me (feb. 1968). 1967 / indspillet i '66).

The Walker Brothers "Living Above Your Head" (1966) (single)

Living Above Your Head
, 7'' single
release date: 1966
format: vinyl
[single rate: 3,5 / 5] [3,68]
producer: John Franz
label: Philips - nationality: USA

Single release by US pop trio The Walker Brothers consisting of John Walker (aka John Maus), Scott Walker (aka Noel Scott Engel), and Gary Walker (aka Gary Leeds) none of which were related. The single is a Spanish, Dutch, and Danish only release with the title track taken from the trio's second album Portrait (1966). The title track is a cover by US pop group Jay & The Americans taken [original] from the album Living Above Your Head (1966) - the B-side is credited Scott Walker and producer John Franz.
This particular Danish print comes from my parents' record collection. I recall playing this at 7-12 years of age, and remember finding it one of my prefered singles. Stylewise, it's vocal harmony-based baroque pop.

Shocking Blue "Send Me a Postcard" (1968) (single)

l-r.: Cor van der Beek, Mariska Veres
Klaasje van der Wal, Robbie van Leeuwen
Send Me a Postcard
, 7'' single
release date: Dec. 14, 1968
format: vinyl (IMA 1002) (1970 issue)
[single rate: 4 / 5] [3,78]
producer: Shocking Blue
label: I. M. A. Records - nationality: The Netherlands

Tracklist: A) "Send Me a Postcard" (4,5 / 5) - - B) "Harley Davidson"

Single release by Dutch rock band Shocking Blue originally released on Pink Elephant in '68 and released for the Scandinavian market with this issue in 1970. The single appears to be the band's only third single and it's one of three consecutive non-album single releases following the band's album debut Shocking Blue (Nov. 1967). The band was formed in '67 and went through changing line-ups with a different output starting with music influenced by The Beatles and a folk pop style as expressed by American quartet Brothers Four, but from '68 when Mariska Veres became the band's lead vocalist after founding member Fred de Wilde left, the band changed style to a bolder psychedelic rock founded in American West Coast blues rock. For this single, the band consists of new member vocalist Marika Veres, and the three founding members: lead guitarist and main songwriter Robbie van Leeuwen, bassist Klaasje van der Wal, and drummer Cor (Cornelis) van der Beek. Both tracks are credited van Leeuwen, and the single became an international hit, which was perceived as a fine attempt with a mix of styles exemplified by Jefferson Airplane and The Doors.
The band continued up until 1974 when songwriter and composer van Leeuwen left to concentrate on his newly formed band Galaxy-Lin, and Shocking Blue then released its final album Good Times (1974) after which Mariska Veres left to pursue a solo career and the band split. Shocking Blue reformed in 1980 in their classic line-up and stayed together until '97 when van Leeuwen now left for good, and from hereon and up until 2006 the band was continued around Veres and new lead guitarist André van Geldorp with a changing line-up. The band was put to an abrupt end Dec. 2006 as Mariska Veres died from newly detected cancer.
Shocking Blue was much more than just a few single hits, and among them definitely Send Me a Postcard - they showed an alternative to American and British psychedelic rock, which isn't just covers and copy, and together with Danish band Savage Rose, they stand as a strong European contribution to the vast pool of rock and to the formation and the development of psychedelic rock of the 1970s.

This Swedish issue of the single, released three months after the band's third album Scorpio's Dance (Sep. 1970), was part of my older brother's record collection, and it's a single I vividly recall from age 10-14 years of age - and at that time, it was one of my absolute favourite rock songs.

Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band "Trout Mask Replica" (1982)

Trout Mask Replica
release date: Jun. 16, 1969
format: digital (28 x File, FLAC) (2021 remaster)
[album rate: 3,5 / 5] [3,66]
producer: Frank Zappa
label: Zappa Records / Bizarre Industries - nationality: USA

Track highlights: 1. "Frownland" - 2. "The Dust Blows Forward 'n the Dust Blows Back" - 4. "Ella Guru" - 6. "Moonlight on Vermont" - 7. "Pachuco Cadaver" - 12. "My Human Gets Me Blues" - 14. "Hair Pie: Bake 2" (instr.) - 16. "Well" - 17. "When Big Joan Sets Up" - 18. "Fallin' Ditch" - 21. "Orange Claw Hammer" - 22. "She's Too Much for My Mirror" - 25. "The Blimp (Mousetrapreplica)" - 28. "Veteran's Day Poppy"

3rd studio album by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band (here: a sextet) follows 8 months after the album Strictly Personal (Oct. 1968). As a start, let's just conclude that this very album is 'beyond'... Just beyond... anything! It's unlike anything else, and for that alone, it's worth paying attention to. Whether you like the content - its musical statement - or not, because it tampers with the idea of music as such. At the point of the release, I guess people thought of it as a band effort and generally thinking of Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band as a unit of sorts - like that of The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and / or Frank Zappa and the Mothers - without comparison but with the idea of a band with a leader, and in this case with Don Van Vliet fronting His Magic Band (sometimes refered to as 'The Magic Band'). And to some extent that perception makes sense; and then on the other hand, when comparing His Magic Band over the years, it appears much more of a one-man project with shifting collaborators - of sorts. Yes, a few of these reappear over many albums but already here, only drummer & percussionist John French plays on all three albums up until this point. Guitarist John Cotton (here credited as 'Antennae Jimmy Semens') was included in the band on the predecessor but this is the first with guitarist Bill Harkleroad (credited as 'Zoot Horn Rollo'), bassist Mark Boston (credited as 'Rockette Morton'), and bass clarinet player Victor Hayden (credited as 'The Mascara Snake') - alledgedly, names that Van Vliet came up with. The album was released as a double vinyl album on Straight Records and with Frank Zappa as sound engineer and producer. Much has been said about this specific album. There are testimonies indicating that much of the recordings were taped live in the studio, or with the band playing instruments in one room and with Don Van Vliet contributing with vocals in another room. And then there's the story of how an untrained Van Vliet composed and made the basics of the songs on a piano (an instrument he didn't know how to play) after which John French transcribed Vliet's instrumental pieces into musical notations that he then handed out to individual instrumentalists to play on their instrument in whatever way the music had been transcribed to fit the specific instrument. Other ideas were used as creative ideas such as having the individual band members sit in isolated rooms playing their part while they couldn't hear the others - same approach was used for recording Vliet's vocal, which resulted in out-of-sync passages that were used as they were recorded, and then there are stories suggesting that Van Vliet insisted on day-long rehearsals which included sleep deprivation and little food intakes to maximize attention to the individual parts - as a way to become a part of the instrument itself.
I first came across this album in the early 80s at the local library. I was immediately attracted by the front cover, which I somehow found appealing. That cover told me what was inside it, was something special. I took the album home and understood absolutely nothing of it and thought of it as unappealing chaotic noise - a mistake. Over the years, I have come across the album at various stages of my life, and each time, I have discovered something new about it, found out that little bit more - and found it increasingly more fascinating. Needless say, the album is longtime a musical treasure and the good old Captain Beefheart has become an icon.
The album wasn't a big contemporary success - hardly any of Captain Beefheart albums experienced major commercial success, although, this one did reach number #21 in the UK. In retrospect however, none of his albums have been rejected as musical failures, which I guess has to do with Van Vliet's mission as an artists: to create music free of conventions [this is not a statement by Van Vliet but my assessment]. There's no doubt that Van Vliet was inspired by early American music and he is nonetheless regarded as one the most genuine original blues rock vocalists. As a composer, he was quite unconventional and an untamed figure. He was always motivated by ideas of creativity and has always found his music labelled as avant-garde. Yes, it's experimental but he appears to have been inspired by free jazz and world music, and what he pursued was perhaps a confrontation of the perception of how music is established as a concept. Why and when do we understand something as music?
Trout Mask Replica is a... wonderous one-of-a-kind release. It's an extensive listen with around 80 mins. playing time. Some regard it as a stunning masterpiece, others see it as more of a non-sensical piece of formative artistic matter. The latter group of people, I find, often reject the album instantly, or quite early. Regardless, how people experience the album, there's no doubt that artists have and will continue to be inspired by its ideas and its output, which in essence comes from an unrestricted form. The album consists of 28 fragments of music - some tracks may sound alike and yet they all give you a taste of patternless music, paradoxically, with obvious traits of patterns. An overwhelming thing about it is that it was produced in 1969 and still sounds as something quite new. And did I mention, it's experimental? Actually, it's quite experimental and could be a bit of overwhelming to listen to in one long take. I'm still in doubt about how to regard it entirely - I guess, I might never will, I'm not a genius but not few have called Van Vliet just that. He may have been living in a period of acid heads but his ideas still made a lot of sense. Just the title of the album is something, isn't?! What is a 'trout mask'? And then a 'replica'! "Ah, the good old 'trout mask' but as a replica! The title itself plays with conception of an idea, of what is art and what sense does it make when we roll a dice and change the rules?
The album is not entirely a pleasant listen, but it surely has its moments. Fragments are there, binding it together for an instant before dissolving and reappearing as something else. Rhythm patterns are not continous. Nothing is. It means, you probably won't be listening to this as a nice background tapestry for any social arrangement. You may not want to put it on while driving with your family, and so on. It's something that require your attention. Pieces and fragments are both funny and absolutely strong. As something with music pleasure potential, I would hand it 1 out of 5 stars. I'm still thinking 4 out 5 and understand critics who see it as 5 / 5 when you see it as a statement that challenges out perception of how music is constructed. And then I land on 3,5 / 5 because of its musical 'qualities'... though, what is quality when speaking of music? And this is the kind of questions you may have to ask yourself when listening to this, which basically proves its worth. I really enjoy it but for various reasons and at various times.
Definitely recommended.

Tex Ritter "Songs of the Golden West" (1961)

Songs of the Golden West
release date: 1961
format: vinyl (SREG 1001) (1966 reissue)
[album rate: 2 / 5] [2,18]
producer: Lee Gillette
label: Regal - nationality: USA

Studio album by Tex Ritter originally titled Hillbilly Heaven and released in 1961 by Capitol Records. Already in '61, the album was issued with the title Songs of the Golden West in New Zealand, also with the same cover as this UK reissue. This version was again reissued in '69 in Australia and in the UK, now with a new cover, and another issue with the title Deck of Cards was also reissued in the UK. All of these different issues, however, has the same tracklisting as the original album from 1961.
The album was part of my parents' record collection, and I only got this after my dad's passing in 2016. I don't recall this from my childhood, and I think my dad purchased this at some point during the 1990s at a time when he had begun listening to country music and especially the music by Willie Nelson and Jim Reeves.

8th studio album by Etta James originally released on Cadet Records and produced by Rick Hall. This is a wonderful soul and r&b album by one of vocal jazz great voices. All tracks are credited various composers, which was a typical procedure of the 1950s and 60s, but Etta's gift is to understand and make them all her own. A must-have for lovers of soul. The extended 2001 MCA cd reissue with the added subtitle "The Complete Muscle Shoals Sessions" comes with an additional 10 bonus tracks. The 2014 vinyl issue is a replica of the original album and with the same original 12 tracks.

Sten & Stanley "Får jag följa dig en bit på vägen" (1967) (single)

Får jag följa dig en bit på vägen
, 7'' single
release date: 1967
format: vinyl (F77005)
[single rate: 2 / 5] [2,12]
producer: ?
label: Decca - nationality: Sweden

Tracklist: A) "Får jag följa dig en bit på vägen" - - B) "Kapten Kidd"

Single release by Swedish schlager and 'dansband' Sten & Stanley named after two of the founding members Sten Nilsson and Stanley Gransström. The two songs stem from two albums, the title song is taken from Röd var din mund, and the B-side is found on Sten & Stanley's australiska sångbok, both released in 1967.
This single was part of my parents' record collection, and it's a single I knew of at age 6-10 but never really enjoyed - probably because it's styled as schlager music.

Greyhounds "I (Who Have Nothing)" (1969) (single)

I (Who Have Nothing)
, 7'' single
release date: 1969
format: vinyl (SC 1106)
[single rate: 2,5 / 5] [2,60]
producer: ?
label: Scan-Disc - nationality: Sweden

Tracklist: A) "I (Who Have Nothing)" - - B) "Theme From the Wild Angels"

Single release from Swedish rock band Greyhounds. The A-side is credited 'Mogul - Donida - Leiber - Stoller'. Now, I know who Leiber & Stoller are. Mogul was a moniker for Italian songwriter Giulio Rapetti and Carlo Donida was an Italian composer and together they made the song "Uno dei tanti" ['One of the Many' / 'One Among Many'], which was transposed to English with new lyrics by songwriter-duo Jerome Leiber & Mike Stoller. The Italian song was originally performed by Joe Sentieri in 1961, and the translated version was initially performed by Ben E. King in 1963 [see more info on other versions here]. The B-side is credited Mike Curb, who made music to Roger Corman's 1966 film "The Wild Angels". There's not much other info on the vinyl labels or on the cover, which has identical sides, but the band appears to consisting of lead vocalist Bo Hellström, guitarist Roger Blomdahl, bassist Rolf Ahlin, keyboardist and vocalist Willy Björkman, and drummer Hasse Andersson.
This single probably comes from my older brother's record collection. I think, the cover somehow signals more than their music - and they could have only just watched Dennis Hopper's "Easy Rider", which premiered Jul. 1969, but most certainly knew of Corman's "The Wild Angels", in which the B-side original is found - and they try really hard to pose as a Swedish Steppenwolf copy.
I recall putting the single on the turntable as a kid and being disappointed about not really finding any enjoyment in it. Now, some five decades later, I still don't find much pleasure from it.

Sir Henry and His Butlers "Camp" / "Pretty Style" (single)

Camp / Pretty Style
release date: 1967
format: vinyl (DD 799)
[single rate: 3,5 / 5] [3,42]
producer: ?
label: Columbia - nationality: Denmark

Tracklist: A) "Camp" - - B) "Pretty Style"

Single release by Danish beat quintet Sir Henry and His Butlers. At this point the band line-up counts Ole 'Sir Henry' Bredahl, Tommy Seebach Mortensen on vocals and organ, Peer Frost on lead guitar, Arne Schrøder on rhythm guitar, Jens Bøgvad on drums.
The single was issued all over europe, and the instrumental A-side "Camp" became one of the band's strongest hits, which also caught international attention, and in retrospect, also "Pretty Style" has met acclaim as an early example of a psychedelic rock style. This single was part of my parents' record collection, and it's a single I knew of at age 6-10. Back in the day, I liked this better than their '66 single, although, it never was a favourite, For this both songs are original compositions with the A-side written by 'O. Henry' (meaning Ole Bredahl) and the B-side is credited 'O. Henry & T. Mortensen - J. Bøgvad' - meaning Ole Bredahl & Tommy Seebach Mortensen (the two main songwriters) and drummer Jens Bøgvad.

Let's Go to San Francisco, 7'' single
release date: Aug. 4, 1967
format: vinyl (DM 142)
[single rate: 3,5 / 5] [3,48]
producer: John Carter & Ken Lewis
label: Deram - nationality: England, UK

Tracklist: A) "Let's Go to San Francisco" (part 1) - - B) "Let's Go to San Francisco" (part 2) (parts 1 & 2)

Single release by British pop-project band The Flower Pot Men founded by the two songwriters John Carter (aka John Nicholas Shakespeare) and Ken Lewis (aka Kenneth James Hawker), who experienced some success providing pop songs for other artists in the late 1960s under the name of Carter & Lewis. The project-band was founded by the two songwriters to perform their songs, which was heavily inspired by the sound of The Beach Boys, and Let's Go to san Fransisco was one of their biggest hits.
This particular Danish print of the single was part of my parents' record collection.

John Fred and His Playboys "Judy in Disguise (With Glasses)" (1967) (single)

Judy in Disguise (With Glasses)
, 7'' single
release date: 1967
format: vinyl (C 282)
[single rate: 3,5 / 5] [3,45]
producer: John Fred, Andrew Bernard
label: California - nationality: USA

Tracklist: A) "Judy in Disguise (With Glasses)" - - B) "When the Lights Go Out"

Single release by John Fred and His Playboys, a Louisiana, US 'bubble-gum' band with John Fred Gourrier as founder. Later in '67 they changed name to John Fred & His Playboy Band. The title song here is by Fred and band mate Andrew Bernard, and it's made as a parody on The Beatles' "Judy in the Sky With Diamonds". The single was an international hit and actually topped the single "Hello, Goodbye" by The Beatles on the American Billboard Hot 100 singles list where it topped the charts in early '68. The title song also remains the band's only hit.
The single was part of my parents' record collection and a record I used to enjoy back as a 6-11 year old. Initially, I just found the song really good, and along the way, I also found the front cover... quite fascinating.

Bjørn Tidmand "Hold dig på måtten, Jensen" (1967) (single)

Hold dig på måtten, Jensen, 7'' single
release date: 1967
format: vinyl (DK 1649)
[single rate: 2,5 / 5] [2,45]
producer: ?
label: Odeon - nationality: Denmark

Tracklist: A) "Hold dig på måtten, Jensen" - - B) "Giv mig din hånd"

Single release by early Danish pop vocalist Bjørn Tidmand who had only just had a singles hit with "Nu ta'r jeg til Dublin". This one, a cover of the Swedish song "Håll dej till höger, Svensson" performed by The Telstars and written by Peter Himmelstrand and with new Danish lyrics by Peter Mynte became another hit by Tidmand. Somewhat odd, the original was an information song to the Swedish population about the new traffic rule of conduct when transferring from left-handed trafic to right-handed, whereas the Danish version is a song directed to Jensen about staying true to his beloved and the warning of not fooling around...
This single was part of my parents' record collection, it's a song I remember from my childhood as a song I enjoyed at age 6-9. I did like Bjørn Tidmand as a pre-teen, at a time when the music of my parents still had the strongest impact on my liking.

Single release by early Danish pop vocalist Bjørn Tidmand who made a national breakthrough at age 23 when he participated at the national Eurovision contest with the song "Amiga Mia", which came second and around the same time he released the national hit song "Brænd mine breve" - a cover of "Pick Up the Pieces" by Larry Finnegan (aka John Finneran). "Nu ta'r jeg til Dublin" is an Irish traditional - the original is titled "Off to Dublin in the Green" (here with The Dubliners) - with Danish lyrics by Thøger Olesen and Tidmand's version topped the Danish singles chart in '67.
This single was part of my parents' record collection, it's a song I remember from my childhood as a song I enjoyed at age 6-9. I did like Bjørn Tidmand as a pre-teen, at a time when the music of my parents still had the strongest impact on my liking.

release date: 1966
format: vinyl (X 84 84)
[single rate: 3 / 5] [2,78]
producer: ?
label: HMV - nationality: Denmark

Tracklist: A) "Ved landsbyens gadekær" - - B) "Spring ud!"

Single release by Keld og The Donkeys (aka Keld & The Donkeys). The title track is credited Bror Karlsson (aka Kalle Cederkvist, aka Wilhelm Sörensen), and the B-side is credited 'Joe Halford - Jay Justin - Susanne Palsbo' with the latter having translated the original song "Get That Feeling" by Halford and Justin (released as B-side to Justin's single Reminiscing in 1964). The band existed under various line-ups in the years from 1962 and up until 1980. Initially, the band went under the name of (The) Donkeys (from '65 / '66 as Keld og The Donkeys, shortly after changed to Keld & The Donkeys). For this single, the band consists of lead vocalist & guitarist Keld Heick, lead guitarist Paul Malmqvist, bassist Norbert Persson, and with Henry Nielsen on drums.
This issue comes from my parents' record collection, and I recall playing this at age 6-10 years old, and I remember actually really enjoyed the title song, which I found sounded much like Cliff Richard / The Shadows, and to some extent as a softer version of The Beatles.

Sir Henry and His Butlers "Times A-Getting Hard" (1966) (single)

Times A-Getting Hard
, 7'' single
release date: 1966
format: vinyl (T 7237)
[single rate: 2,5 / 5] [2,64]
producer: Per Sørensen
label: Sonet - nationality: Denmark

Tracklist: A) "Times A-Getting Hard" - - B) "Money Honey"

Single release by Danish band Sir Henry and His Butlers. The band is one of many Beatles-inspired bands that saw the light of day in the mid-1960s. Actually, the band was founded as early as 1964 by three ex-members of The 5 Danes: lead vocalist and bassist Ole 'Sir Henry' Bredahl, lead guitarist Carsten Elgstrøm, and drummer Leif Davidsen. The band was expanded to a quartet and then to a quintet and underwent changing line-ups but from 1965 the line-up is the same who plays on this with Bredahl on vocals and bass, Tommy Seebach Mortensen on vocals and organ, Carsten Elgstrøm on lead guitar, Arne Schrøder on rhythm guitar, Jens Bøgvad on drums. Shortly following the recording of this, Elgstrøm left the band and Schrøder took over as lead guitarist.
This single was part of my parents' record collection, and it's a single I knew of at age 6-10 but never really enjoyed that much. Both tracks are covers - the A-side credited Lee Hays, and B-side is credited Smith [?], although, it could be a cover of the Jesse Stone song performed by one Mr. E. Presley.
