15th studio album by Neil Young is a display of his continued journey with experimental pop / rock music and a continued "lost-ness". This album is mainly synthpop a bit like Trans just without the electronic, and after which you might have thought: "Okay, nice try, or...", and then he takes on yet another lost ride into a territory where others have been and produced masterpieces as natural artists and performers of that style. Okay, it's not synthpop only. It's also pop / rock but a peculiar attempt to make a 1980s big release like a Springsteen's Born in the USA or Bowie's Let's Dance, only this is far from those apart from the production sound.
This is not recommended.

6th studio album by Radiohead (fourth to be co-produced by Nigel Godrich) is the band's continued journey into new territory. It's the band's so far final studio album released on the EMI-owned label, Parlophone. The band has moved away from the jazz rock influence, which is heard on the two previous albums and instead they combine an acoustic-founded base of soft rock with a more electronic sound by incorporating synths and programming in addition to piano and guitar-based compositions, thus making a particular spacial and sometimes almost ambient sound.
Almost as usual the new album, the new style, made way for critical acclaim, and the album was like its predecessors nominated several prizes and [as could easily have been predicted] it topped the national album charts list as well as selling more than just well in a number of countries.
I have never really enjoyed this particular album much. I have tried to listen to it many times but mostly I just find myself in desperate search of 'that thing' I do not grasp, and each time it simply eludes me. I have come across some positive reviews referring to the album's strong lyrics, as comments to Western society, American politics, etc., which is to say: strong narrative qualities. However, I never have and never will be able to use the lyrical aspect of music alone as an argument for critical acclaim. In music, there has to be good music. Point taken, 'cause I think it lacks here. I consider it a low point only exceeded by the debut in the band's discography.

4th studio album by South African (model and) pop artist Lira, who makes music in a more traditional contemporary jazz-inspired r&b and pop-style. Her second album Feel Good from 2006 was met as a great success in South Africa, where she was nominated in 5 categories at the Grammy Music Awards in 2007. Lira has a crisp, soulful, and velvet-like singing voice, not unlike that of Sade, and she varies the single compositions from singing in African tongue and English, which seems her preferred singing language.

5th studio album by Gianna Nannini following one year after the album G.N., which was an Italian affair made with just a handful of musicians, and as contrary to that Latin Lover is produced by Nannini and famous German ("kraut rock") producer Conny Plank, aka. Konrad Plank, who worked as sound engineer and producer on numerous iconic albums for artists like Kraftwerk, Neu!, Brian Eno, Can, DAF, Devo, Ultravox, Eurythmics, Ideal, and Killing Joke - just to mention a few. The album counts eight songs with a total running time at just below 33 minutes. Here, Plank is credited as co-producer, for synths on one track (#2) and sampling (track #8), and he is credited as arranger on four ( tracks #1, #5, #6 & #8). Apart from Plank, the album feature several international artists, which include Annette Humpe from German band Ideal on three tracks, Hans Bäär (aka Hans Maahn from German folk rock band Hoelderlin), Anni Lennox (from Eurythmics) on keyboards on four tracks, Mauro Pagani (from Italian progressive rock band PFM), and Jacki Liebezeit from Can featuring as drummer on seven tracks (all but #1). All songs are credited Nannini, and three tracks (#1, #2 & #4) are co-written with Italian composer Mauro Paoluzzi.
The album continues the same energetic pop / rock style she demonstrated with the predecessor, and the album is Nannini's second consecutive album to peak as number #24 on the national album charts. The album didn't spawn any noteworthy hits, but it's undoubtedly the album that secured her noteworthy airplay as an international European artist via songs like "Ragazzo dell'Europa" and the title track. The successive album Puzzle (1983) peaked as high as number #2 in Italy, but without Latin Lover that success may seem questionable.
Gianna Nannini may be overshadowed by the success of compatriot Zucchero Fornaciari as Italy's best known rock artist - and yes, he has made ten successive number #1 studio albums in Italy (1987 - 2016) and he is recognised as an international star, and despite my admiration for his life work, imho, Nannini is Italy's absolute best rock-artist. Although this is from her early period and went on and made other fine albums with much better charting performances, Latin Lover remains one of her best ever.
Highly recommended.

Single release by Siouxsie and the Banshees and the band's first issue featuring Robert Smith (The Cure) on guitar. The title track is a cover-song originally by The Beatles and credited Lennon / McCartney.
The single was issued in regular 7'' and 12'' issues. I purchased a special issue, which comes with a six panel fold-out green sleeve.
The single is the band's best-selling single-hit making it to number #3 on the British singles chart list, but it also brought the band some fame in North America.
I guess, its appeal to a largely mainstream audience secured the fine sales numbers. Having purchased the vinyl single, it never appealed much to my taste, though. I think, I thought of it as being too pretentious and contrary to the style I had come to associate with Siouxsie and the Banshees.

4th studio album by Danish quartet TV-2 follows closely on a similar stylistic path as Beat (1983), although, this is even better composed and produced - this time with Danish producer Michael Bruun, who has worked with Danish artists like Rocazino, Tøsedrengene, Jens Rugsted, and Halberg Larsen.
The album contains many of the band's best loved stables and it doubled the sales numbers of the predecessor, just like former had doubled its numbers.
Imho, this is the band's best album.

4th studio album by Joan As Police Woman, or Joan Wasser, which is her real name. The album is released on Play It Again Sam and produced by Joan Wasser and Tyler Wood. Initially, I found it a bit hard to rate this album. On one hand it's very much in family with the music by St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark). It's art pop and singer / songwriter at the same time (not noise pop like Clark), but it's also Joan's most chamber pop and soul-oriented album so far, although, not just soul and not really folk-based singer / songwriter. I think, what I'm hinting at is that it has so many stylistic references (even neo-psychedelia and doo-wop elements) that it's a huge melting pot of styles and genres, which ain't necessarily bad, but it makes the album a bit uneven, yet, very interesting. Especially the bolder soul-shaped tracks are great but then again: I also really enjoy "Good Together", which is more art pop cloned neo-soul. I think it's really good, refreshing, and quite original.
May 4, 2014: By now, I have listened to the album enough times to hand it another star to my initial 3 star verdict, and I think it even betters her so far best release The Deep Field (2011). For me, this is clearly one of this year's most interesting releases.

4th and for a time the final studio album by Stiff Little Fingers originally released on Chrysalis is made with producer Nick Tauber, who had previously produced for Thin Lizzy and Toyah. Shortly after releasing Go for It drummer Jim Reilly left the band and was subsequently replaced by (Brian) 'Dolphin' Taylor (former Tom Robinson Band). The band's usual cover is the song "Love of the Common People", which works quite nicely in this punk rock version.
With this it's clear that the band has embraced a lighter and more mainstream sound building on a more traditional pop / rock melodic songwriter tradition with less focus on the punk rock roots.
The album failed to attract fans and was met by luke-warm reviews, and as a consequence, Jake Burns single-handedly decided to shelve the band as he found this was an artistic peak they wouldn't be able to pass anyway.
The best tracks are the most energetic ones and the cd reissue with an additional 5 bonus tracks makes it a better bargain as it also contains the fine "Two Guitars Clash", but the overall impression is that Now Then.. is the band's least favourable release. At the time, the split seemed inevitable unless they could come up with a new direction after leaving punk rock behind. Soon after the split, the fine double album All the Best compilation album was released.
Jake Burns began working with former The Jam bassist Bruce Foxton - a collaboration project that ended in '86 and then he got together with the former band mates and reformed Stiff Little Fingers in '87 for a reunion tour, which proved so successful that they decided to revive the band, which has been active ever since.

1st 5 track studio ep by Robyn is like her eponymous album from 2005 produced by Klas Åhlund and as that released on her newly founded label. After the release of the original Swedish Robyn album in 2005, Robyn started featuring on releases by various UK artists and she released this ep featuring the cover song "Cobrastyle", which would later be included on the international version of her acclaimed 2005 album. The running time is only a little above 16 mins. and track #1 is here in a slightly altered version than the one on her album. "Cobrastyle", originally by Teddybears (who also produced the song here) is the recording one will find on her 2007 album. Robyn's version is quite different from the original and basically just is nicely transformed into her electropop universe. The Saul Wiliams cover "List of Demands" is a soulful live duet, which actually works pretty nicely, despite being a tight lo-fi recorded song, which seems more like a bonus track. "Be Mine" in a "Ballad Version" introduces Robyn's take on her own material by making alternate acoustic / ballad recordings of familiar uptempo Robyn hit songs, and that's another strong version. "Jack U Off" is Robyn's cover of a Prince song that would be included on her 2007 European version of Robyn, and that is like track #3 a song recorded with minimal post-production.
All in all a mighty fine ep that links the two Robyn album editions.

Single release by Danish punk rock band Dream Police consisting of vocalist Johnny Concrete (aka John Østergaard Frandsen), guitarist Michael Krickau, bassist S. E. Frog (aka Svend Erik Mortensen), and drummer Michael Anthony (aka Michael Kirk). This formation of the band is the third and last incarnation of the Dream Police. Johnny Concrete founded and led the label No Aarhus, on which he issued some live concerts featuring American 'hardcore punk' artists The Minutemen and Black Flag - this is the only vinyl release from the label.
I purchased the single almost without no knowledge about the band. All I knew was that they took part in the Danish compilation album Pære Punk from 1979, an album I purchased in the early 80s. Their contribution on that wasn't an unforgettable one, and this only follows closely in that regard. The band plays a garage rock-styled, or proto-punk version of the original punk rock with bonds to style of MC5.

9th studio album by Everything but the Girl. Despite being released two years since the duo's last album, it's a fine continued style from Amplified Heart (1994). That album was mostly sophisti-pop but the bonus track "Missing (Todd Terry Club Mix)", and it's house- and drum and bass-version of the album track, gave them their international breakthrough. Here, Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt have taken a move away from their jazz pop and sophisti-pop influences and based the music on the house-style that brought them fame and combined that with downtempo and elements from trip hop. As with reissues of the '94 album, this has one of the original tracks remixed by Todd Terry: "Wrong (Todd Terry Remix)".
The first two and the title track are the best songs here, but the remainders never bore. I don't find it on the same top-level as their great '94 album, but it's more than just fine, and it proves how this capable duo have found their shelf combining their unique melancholic sophisti-pop with styles taken from electronic music as they now seem to be making the best music of their career.
The album is enlisted in "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die".

17th studio album by Van Morrison following 14 months after No Guru, No Method, No Teacher originally released on Mercury follows closely the same stylistic formula as found on the predecessor, although, with Van Morrison nothing is exactly as before. The album is unique in more than one sense. For a start, it contains three instrumentals (tracks #1, #6, and #11), and then there's a stronger tone of jazz all over the album. One more thing is that Morrison is normally credited vocals, at times guitar, more seldom piano parts, but here, he also plays the saxophone much more than, probably, on any other of his many studio albums, which is shame 'cause he does that with the same touch and elegance as when playing his most renowned instrument.
The album is one of his warmest and most sentimental studio albums, and he performs with mature finesse. The album is yet another fine release from Van the Man.

A compilation album by Shriekback released on Kaz Records. This was the first album I came across with the band back in '84 or '85. I believe, I first found it at the library where I used to go at least once a week to find new music. Although, I was more into more direct punk rock, melodic new wave, and gloomy dark gothic rock, I found this more than just fine. I loved the disturbing tension of the arrangements, which made it cool, fascinating and rather alternative new wave post-punk in a sort of avantgardist kind of way. I didn't know anything of the band, and only discovered some 10 years later that this is actually a compilation album comprising singles and early releases. In fact, I tried hard to find other albums by the band but it was simply impossible at the time, as their albums weren't distributed in my country. A few years later, I found the compilation album Evolution (1988), also at the library, but it didn't attract me like this one. The band never experienced any great success while releasing albums in the 80s but they have later on been praised for their early industrial sound, which has been a big influence for electronic and industrial bands in the 1990s. The band continued to make albums throughout the '80s, '90s, and early 2000s (and may likely still perform) with an ever changing members list. The core of the band was always former XTC keyboardist Barry Andrews, and former Gang of Four bassist Dave Allen, who got together with guitarist Dave Marsh and drummer Martyn Barker to form the initial and most persistent backbone of the band. Their commercial highs came with the more dance and funk-oriented albums Big Night Music (1986) and Go Bang! (1988) - albums I never found that enjoyable but that was the style they stuck with after leaving a distinct experimental expression. This album, however, is one I have returned to ever since the 1980s. Far from all music of the '80s last this long, and it holds a special position, as a hidden gem, and I think that the music still sounds fresh and fascinating. Especially tracks like "Sexthinkone" and "Evaporation" are true masterpieces with unique and fabulous bass and drum-lines.

4th studio album release by Laurie Anderson follows 3½ years after Home of the Brave and primarily sees Anderson take a further step into more traditional mainstream music, although still founded on experimental soil, she makes use of art pop melody structure and blend it with her take on art rock and bits from pop / rock. It's not bad, not at all, but it's not really great either. As much as I like her most experimental avantgarde music, "Babydoll", being the boldest pop track on the album, it's still my favourite track here. It seems Anderson is sort of caught by her own artistic desire to just create music and wishes expressed by the "money men", who sees a potential of turning her into something with a stronger mainstream appeal. And here, tracks point in all directions. Some are pop-founded with traditional melody structure with choruses, verses and backing musicians, whereas other songs point more to her will to create something original confronting boundaries of modern classical and art rock. The sound production reeks of late 80s with a sound mix focusing on heavy arrangements with bass and drums up front that doesn't fall far from the works by Tina Turner, Genesis, Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush etc.
I've always found this album too incoherent and without much new from one of the most talented American artists of the 20th century. And in that regard, Strange Angels simply doesn't provide us with what she's capable of.

Studio album debut by the Danish trio Voss Torp Brill - the remaining band members of the band Kliché at a time when the band was on a hiatus after releasing its second album Okay Okay Boys (1982) and lead vocalist Lars Hug worked on his solo debut. Voss is also known as Johnny Voss (aka Johannes E. Møller) is credited on bass, percussion and vocals, Brill / Anders Brill (aka Anders Gilberg) is credited on drums, drum machines, percussion and backing vocals, and Torp, or Nils Torp (real name) is credited on guitars, keyboards, synthesizers and backing vocals. The album is produced by the trio together with Icelandic producer Hjörtur Blöndal.
In late '84 or early '85, the four members of Kliché was back together and worked on their third album, when Lars Hug declared the disbandment of Kliché.
The cover artwork is credited Johnny Voss, and he later took up his work as painter and is known for his paintings of sail ships and marine paintings as Johannes E. Møller.

5th studio album by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds follows two years after Your Funeral... My Trial
This marks a bit of a return to the former punk rock sound and style. The band is extended by two new members making it a sextet: German keyboardist Roland Wolf(e), and American guitarist Kid Congo Powers, who had only just left the band The Gun Club (also ex- The Cramps). The music here is less blues rock and more alt. rock styled but with clear references to post-punk, and some of the raw energy from the earlier albums are present. Perhaps this is the bands most gothic rock founded album. Still, it has the band's characteristic theatrical or cabaret rhythm at its base, which is part pub rock and part drunken sailor chants. All in all, not really great but more than just interesting and close to the sound and style of Your Funeral... My Trial.

The song is actually a song composed and written by producer Keith Forsey, who already had the band in mind as he wrote the song and only after several attempts, he finally managed to persuade the band members to record and arrange the song, which afterwards turned out to be a perfect song for the band. Peaking at #5, the single became the band's so far best faring single on the UK singles chart list, and it topped the US Billboard Hot 100 list.

4th studio album by Robyn and her first on her self-established label Konichiwa Records. After feeling the restricting record label policy interfering in her artistic work on two albums and unwilling to be promoted as a stereotype in the US, she left Jive Records in 2003. Apparently, she became inspired by the Swedish duo The Knife and its decision to release material on their own label. She paid her way out with Jive Records, with whom she had signed for before BMG took over, and in early 2005 she was able to found her own record label and ready to restart her musical career.
The self-titled album marks her biggest stylistic move. She has moved away from the contemporary r&b sound to her own mix of electropop and dance-pop with influences from hip hop and various electronic styles. Also with regards to her usual co-songwriters, she seeks out new partnerships. The most influential other artist on the album is guitarist, songwriter and producer Klas Åhlund (from the Swedish rock band Teddybears), who has co-written 8 out of 13 tracks. Alexander Kronlund has co-written two tracks, and The Knife has co-written and produced track #2.
The album was originally only released in Sweden and it had two singles accompanying the release, "Be Mine!" and "Who's That Girl", where the former peaked at #3 on the singles chart list in Sweden and reached #10 in the UK. The album completely restarts Robyn's career with positive reviews and at the 2006 Swedish Grammis Award show, "Be Mine!" won for Best Song, the album won the prize for Best Album and Robyn was awarded the prize for Best Female Artist.
Three more singles were released from the album in 2006.
Robyn is easily her so far best album to date.

6th studio album by C.V. Jørgensen following one year after Solgt til stanglakrids was originally his first album on the newly established Danish record label Medley. About the same time, his former label Metronome released the compilation Det Ganske Lille Bands bedste. The new studio album is C.V.'s only with Billy Cross (aka Billy Schwartz) as producer. Following two albums with producer Stig Kreutzfeldt, which had contributed in a broader pop / rock mainstream sound, Jørgensen began a collaboration with Delta-Cross Band in the wake of a completed tour with his normal backing band, who at the same time had embarked on a project with the aim to release music under the name of C.V. Moto. Free from usual collaborators, Jørgensen and Cross had composed the majority of the tracks for a new album with a more regular rock sound as accompaniment to a collection of new songs filled with social awareness. American guitarist Billy Cross had been lead guitarist in the band Topaz (where he performed under the name Billy Schwartz), later he was guitarist on Dylan's two albums from '78: Bob Dylan at Budokan and Street-Legal. In 1977 he began a collaboration with the Danish band Delta Blues Band in Denmark - and shortly afterwards now with Cross officially incorporated in the band, they changed name to Delta-Cross Band. For the album Tidens tern, Cross hired American sound engineer Jay Klugman, who had previously worked with prominent names such as Lou Reed, J. Geils, The Dictators, David Johansen, and The Blues Brothers - on the album he's credited as co-producer [perhaps rather brought in to help Cross fill the role as producer, since this is the very first album with Cross in a role of technical personnel?]. The music was recorded without anyone from C.V.'s normal backing band. Instead, Delta-Cross Band fills this part, which means that Billy Cross is credited on lead and rhythm guitar, he is co-composer, and additionally, he is also musical arranger, Søren Engel is bassist, Troels Jensen handles piano and organ, and Preben Feddersen is drummer. Seen in this light, it is quite natural that the album marks a new chapter in C.V. Jørgensen's discography.
Musically, it differs from his earlier but also his later albums by being kept in a more traditional rock style, which predominantly is based on an American blues rock school - as an obvious result of the strong influence of Delta-Cross Band. It's an album without funk rock, country rock, and folk-oriented mix that had come to characterise Jørgensen's last two albums, and instead this new album sounds more like a period-typical mix of pop / rock with obvious ties to Lou Reed, Link Wray, and perhaps even Springsteen. The songs here are simple harmony-based compositions with Jørgensen's characteristic vocals and lyrics. The combination proved to hold up quite well, at least in terms of raising critical acclaim and good sales figures. The reviewers were enthusiastic, and the album gave Jørgensen his first and probably biggest hit ever with the country plague "Costa del Sol", which soon became a Danish classic and which, four decades later, still is a song you'll hear played on national radio. In Scandinavia, Tidens tern lifted Jørgensen into the league with the greatest contemporary pop / rock artists, and at the beginning of the new millennium the album was selected and found worthy of inclusion in the Danish Agency of Culture's canon list of the finest Danish works [link].
What particularly works so fine on the album is the uncomplicated music in combination with Jørgensen's far from simple lyrics. When you think of his musical background with its sarcastic tone, which precisely had been the hallmark of the traditional political folk and singer / songwriter style he found inspiration from when he first started out as a songwriter, then it's perhaps not too difficult to imagine that C.V. simply himself had difficulty coming to terms with how his astute lyrics at times created a kind of distance to parts of his audience. By wrapping the lyrics in simple traditional rock arrangements, people may have found it easier to digest the extra layer his lyrics contributed. Granted, I still think the album is among his better, but C.V. didn't care much about it himself. He certainly toured with the music for a single year in company of Delta-Cross Band, but already in the Spring of '81 he ended his collaboration with Delta-Cross-Band only to make another artistic U-turn in an attempt to distance himself from the "Costa del Sol"-syndrome he felt subjected to. That also meant a minor break with the new mainstream pop / rock, for which he himself had become one of the biggest apologists.
Tidens tern is a Danish classic without actual fillers, and the album contains several fan favorites - tracks fans simply expected to be played at his concerts.
Once again, the front cover is credited C.V.'s girlfriend, Annemarie Albrectsen.
Great recommendation.

2nd studio album by Editors this time with Irish producer Garret Lee (credited under his moniker Jacknife Lee) is a very strong follow-up album. It shows a fine development in style with more shoe-gaze distorted guitars and keyboards creating a more spacious production. The tracks are stronger compositions and the album has no real weak tracks. I think, this is my favourite release by the band.

The album was released while the band and Jello Biafra were dealing with the lawsuit against the band for having "distributed harmful matter to minors" after their inclusion of an art poster on the previous album Frankenchrist (1985). The music is a return to faster and shorter hardcore punk songs dealing with political and moral issues, and mostly all-American issues with the Reagan administration and moral majority at center of attention (e.g. listen to "Triumph of the Swill"). The vinyl album was released with a newspaper collage by Winston Smith titled "Fuck Facts". The band split after the release, and Jello Biafra continued as solo artist of spoken word performance art, primarily (e.g. 1989, or 2013) but also released a number of collaboration albums as well as forming and continuing in the band Lard.

Studio debut album by German quintet Rammstein consisting of Till Lindemann on vocals, Richard Z. Kruspe on guitar, Paul Landers on guitar, Oliver Riedel on bass guitar, Christian Lorenz on keyboards, and with Christoph Schneider on drums.
Rammstein play industrial metal and what has become known as "Neue Deutsche Härte" ['New German Hardness'], a German variation of hard rock and metal rock often in combination with electronic dance or dance metal. The style of the band seems fostered from several sources of inspiration - most evidently French band KMFDM, American band Nine Inch Nails, Belgian industrial electronic band Front242 and the two Canadian bands, Front Line Assembly and Skinny Puppy; however, Rammstein play its own quite original tight version of industrial metal.
The album attracted international attention, it reached #6 on the national albums chart list - #11 in Austria and top 100 entries in the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and France.
I only heard the album after being introduced to the successor Sehnsucht (1997) and never found it a memorable or strong debut, although, it contains a few fine compositions. Some tracks are "just" a collection of very similar sounding tracks of hardcore metal and industrial metal that seem built on more or less the same formula and only expose little complexity.
The album spawned two single releases: "Du riechst so gut" and "Seemann" with the former pointing more to the style on the preceding albums, and together with "Der Meister" they are also the best tracks found on what appears as the uneven but promising debut.
The video for the song "Rammstein" was made with director David Lynch who used the track for a scene to his 1997 movie "Lost Highway", which also feature a scene with the song "Heirate mich".

Studio debut album by German band Nena consisting of Gabriele Susanne 'Nena' Kerner on lead vocals, Jörn-Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen on keyboard, Carlo Karges on guitar, Jürgen Dehmel on bass, and with Rolf Brendel on drums. The band plays German pop / rock in a mix of synthpop and new wave, which may be labelled as Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW) or new German wave, but with its focus on a pop and synthpop sound with less focus on the punk rock element (art punk, post-punk) and political or cultural criticism like Ideal, D.A.F., Nina Hagen, and Spliff. The producer-duo Reinhold Heil and Manfred Praeker were both members of Nina Hagen Band and later in Spliff (which was formed by the former members of Nina Hagen Band as she pursued her solo career) as keyboardist and bassist / vocalist, respectively, and Heil in particular has become regarded as one of the leading forces to the style of NDW with his contributions to the music of Nina Hagen Band, Spliff, and Nena.
Unfortunately, Nena's hit single "99 Luftballons" became more of a burden as the band soon were labelled "one-hit-wonders" and were only associated with that particular song. However, Nena is much more, and this debut contains several fine songs to prove that. Both "Nur Geträumt" and "Leuchtturm" were well-received in Germany but failed as international singles, perhaps because most songs except "99..." have a more dominant and special style of NDW, which didn't succeed that well outside Germany. The album is a bit of an anachronism. The sound and the production are restricted to a specific time, and the band comes out as a German blend of Blondie, Pretenders, and... Pat Benatar. The album contains fine songs but also lesser compositions, which makes it a difficult listen.

2nd album by Tindersticks released on This Way Up and like the debut produced by the band and Ian Caple. The album is a very strong follow-up to their great debut, and as was with the debut, this is simply titled Tindersticks and therefore often attributed the letters 'II' to distinguish it from the self-titled debut. The track "Travelling Light" is a fine duet featuring Carla Torgerson of The Walkabouts on vocals. I know many consider this album as even better than the debut, only, I don't. Yes, it's tighter and it's possibly more like the style on their following albums. I just don't think it contains that many great tracks, and that's it's biggest weakness. Having said that, I still rate it among the best of 1995 - the band still outbeats the majority of artists at this point of their career with its highly original sound and style. Like the debut it was released as a double vinyl lp and it has a considerable long playing time at around 70 min. with a total of 16 tracks.

4th studio album by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds is the band's second album to be released in '86, although, this is the only album with the band's own original songs. Kicking Against the Pricks (Aug. '86) is in that respect more of a playground with material stretching back over time, and Your Funeral... is the mirror of the band's actual condition with Cave sort of finding his way to a sound and style the band would progress from. This is the band's so far best album with a style that would become alt. rock and which draws on blues rock, art rock and post-punk. On top of that, one might add singer / songwriter to the band's repertoire for the first time, with due thanks to Cave's personal writings, although, he may be deep into heroin drug addiction at the time. Without copying, I find that there's a certain amount of inspiration from Tom Waits on this particular album.
The original vinyl release was a double ep album with only 2-3 tracks on each side and with a completely different running order.

4th full studio album by Hüsker Dü released only eight months after New Day Rising introduces the two dominant forces in the band, Bob Mould and Grant Hart as album producers. The album contains 15 tracks of which Mould is credited as songwriter of 9 and Hart of the remaining 5.
With the two vocalists and songwriters as producer-duo, the sound has now improved. Stylistically, the album continues a style of primarily alt. rock and power pop with links to punk rock, or simply: post-hardcore, although, the punk rock element seems further and further away, and what remains is basically one of the finest examples of sources to the initial grunge movement in the early 1990s. For the first time around, Mould and Hart almost share the writing credits - Mould is credited nine, Hart five of the fourteen tracks - not as partners, and not even as co-writers, but more as individual contributors. Hart delivers folk rock and singer / songwriter political and more experimental and introspective material, whereas Mould here outbeats Hart on strong harmony structures, energy and choruses with catchy tunes.
Without being great, this is clearly the band's so far best album, imho.

The Blue Nile

The Blue Nile is a trio formed in the early 1980s in Glasgow, Scotland, UK. Members: Paul Buchanan (vocals, guitar), Robert Bell (bass), Paul Joseph Moore (keyboards). The 3 members formed the band, initially named McIntyre, and actually played for some time without a drummer using drum machines and keyboard effects. Nigel Thomas (drums) has played on all of the band's albums but he doesn't figure on the official band member list and all photos of the band only feature the three forming members. Musically, they play art pop synth pop, and they're known for an original lo-fi style, using few instruments, and also for creating a unique dreamy shape of sound always centered on Buchanan's. lamenting and gentle singing voice. The Blue Nile has only released 4 studio albums over a time span of 20 years. For each album they released, the pause until next album's release, was increased. The first two albums, released on Linn Records were met by very positive reviews by the music press but failed in sales. For the third album, Peace at Last (1996), the band had signed with Warner Bros., but even a major international record label couldn't secure better sales, and is the band's least renowned album. The fourth and most recent album is High (2004) released on Sanctuary Records, which again secured fine reviews but small sales. After the the band's acclaimed second album, they played as studio musicians and guest stars on several other artists' albums, and the trio has remained unchanged in all years. The band's usual drummer, Nigel Thomas, released Public Face, Private Face (2002) as the project band Quiet City featuring vocalist and songwriter Paul Buchanan on three of the tracks, and in 2012 Buchanan released his solo debut album Mid Air. I bought the debut album back in '84, and have been a major fan ever since, always regretting they didn't release more often.
